August 11: Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat continued to be Asia’s shining light when he battled to a one-over-par 71 to emerge as one of the best placed Asians after three rounds at the US PGA Championship on Saturday.
Kiradech, who leads the Asian Tour Order of Merit, is tied for 21st place with six other players that include Japan’s headliner, Ryo Ishikawa on even-par 210 at Oak Hill Country Club.
They are nine shots behind American leader Jim Furyk who leads on 201 total.
Despite the tough conditions at the year’s fourth and final Major, the 24-year-old who has attracted the attention of the international press with his steady progress in some of the world’s biggest events recently, is pleased with his performance which has eclipsed some of the game’s biggest stars that include world number one Tiger Woods who posted a 73.
“I'm happy with my game today because the wind was strong and the pin positions were tough. I started well with two birdies but then missed several short putter-long putts for par on many holes,” said Kiradech, who finished tied 40th in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational last week.
“My biggest mistake was on the 15th where I hit into the water and subsequently made a bad chip for double-bogey,” added the Thai, who marked his card with four bogeys, one double-bogey and five birdies.
Australia’s Marcus Fraser, an Asian Tour winner, slipped to a share of 28th place after a 75 while honorary members K.J. Choi and Vijay Singh signed for 71 and 73 to take tied 34th and 52nd place respectively.
Three-time Order of Merit champion Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, who is eyeing a place in the Presidents Cup team next month, posted a 75 for tied 63rd  place.
