July 30: Asian Tour Order of Merit leader Kiradech Aphibarnrat hopes the experience at The Open will put him in good stead when he makes his debut at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational which starts on Thursday.
The Thai rising star missed the halfway cut at Muirfield a fortnight ago but he is prepared to make amends in the 72-man field at the Firestone Country Club.
“It was a good experience playing in my first Major event. I learnt a lot there especially when I lost my confidence after making a mistake on the first hole. I tried to calm down and my caddy tried to put me in the right frame of mind but I just couldn’t get my game back,” said Kiradech.
He qualified for the event courtesy of his victory at the Maybank Malaysian Open in March and will be the only Thai player in the elite field which includes world number one Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, the newly crowned Open champion and title holder Keegan Bradley.
Bae Sang-moon of Korea, a three-time Asian Tour winner, will also feature in the year’s third World Golf Championship event.
“I’m still young and I’ll admit that I don’t have much experience of playing these big events yet. This is a big year for me and I hope that these experiences of playing in Majors and WGC events will make me a better player,” said the 24-year-old Kiradech, who is a two-time Asian Tour winner.
Currently ranked 90th on the Official World Golf Rankings, Kiradech, who has three top-five finishes on the Asian Tour this season, will also make his way to the PGA Championship, the year’s fourth and final Major next week.
