May 8: Thai duo Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Thongchai Jaidee have qualified for the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Bulgaria from May 16-19.
Kiradech, the current Asian Tour number one, earned his place in the stellar field from the European Tour’s Road to Dubai rankings while Thongchai, a three-time Asian Tour number one, qualified as the leading Asian on the Official World Golf Rankings following the Masters Tournament.
Their appearance in the 24-man field at the breathtaking Thracian Cliffs Golf and Beach Resort will serve as another opportunity for them to qualify for the U.S. Open next month.
Thongchai moved up to 59th place on the world rankings following his fourth place finish at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters on Sunday and needs to stay within the top 60 as of May 27 or June 10 to earn his spot in the year’s second Major.
Kiradech, winner of the Maybank Malaysian Open in March, is currently ranked 85th in the world and needs a solid week in Bulgaria to break into the top-60.
The 2013 field contains a strong showing of proven match play stars, namely five of our European Ryder Cup heroes, Ian Poulter, the 2011 Volvo World Match Play Champion, Graeme McDowell, the 2010 U.S. Open Champion, Peter Hanson, six-time European Tour winner, Italy’s Francesco Molinari and Nicolas Colsaerts, the defending champion,
The players will be competing for an increased prize fund of €3 million (approximately US$3.9 million) with the eventual winner taking home a €800,000 (approximately US$ 1 million) first prize.
The qualified players are divided into eight groups of three players to be played out on Thursday and Friday with 16 players progressing to Saturday’s knock-out stage with the semi-finals and final played on Sunday. The draw will be made at an official press conference at Thracian Cliffs at 1.30pm on Tuesday, May 14.
