incredible india logoNew Delhi, November 8: Chiragh Kumar of India claimed a popular victory at the Panasonic Open India after shooting a two-under-par 70 to clinch his first Asian Tour title by three shots on Sunday.
The 31-year-old prevailed against Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh following an intense battle to claim the winner’s cheque of US$72,000 with a winning total of 13-under-par 275 at the Delhi Golf Club.
Siddikur suffered a reoccurring lower back injury on the second hole and had to battle through the pain barrier before settling for his second runner-up finish in the event. He finished on a 69 to finish tied with Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant (69) in the US$400,000 Asian Tour event.
Namchok Tantipokhakul of Thailand fired a superb 66 to end his campaign in a share of fourth place alongside Mithun Perera (70) of Sri Lanka and Indian duo Jyoti Randhawa (67) and Shubhankar Sharma (69) on 279.

“Winning an Asian Tour event means a lot to me. It is so special for me to win here. It is like a dream come true. This is the best thing that can happen to me. Everybody knows me at this club so it is very special to win,” said Kumar.
Overnight leader Kumar had to fend off a strong challenge from Siddikur as they tied for the lead at the turn. The Indian holed a birdie on 11 to restore order but it was a huge 25-foot birdie putt on the 13th hole which gave him the edge.
Siddikur fought back with a birdie on 15 but two costly bogeys on 17 and 18 dashed his title hopes.
“I always knew that Siddikur will be a tough guy to beat especially when he was one-shot behind me. I’m lucky he didn’t get off to a hot start. It was neck and neck all the way but I kept myself together and played well,” said Kumar.
“I made that long putt on 13 and that gave me a two-shot cushion at that time. It definitely makes things easier to have some cushion especially at the Delhi Golf Club. I missed a short birdie on 14 but I told myself not to let it get to me,” he explained.
Siddikur, a two-time Asian Tour winner, felt pain in his lower back on the second hole and thoughts of retiring flashed through his mind. He received treatment from the physiotherapist on the fourth tee box which eased the pain for the remainder of the round.
“I thought I wasn’t able to play because I was hurt but the physiotherapist gave me some treatment on the fourth tee box and I felt better. I’m happy that I finished my round. I didn’t put any pressure on myself to do well or win because I could feel the pain in my back. The win didn’t come but it is okay,” said Siddikur.

Thaworn, who holds an unprecedented 18 Asian Tour titles, turned in 35 and added two more birdies on his homeward nine to claim his best result so far this year.
“It was tough to chase the leader. Chiragh played very well. I wasn’t focussing on the leaderboard. I knew that if I did well, the result would come. I’m happy with the result. This will is a good confidence boost heading in the next few Asian Tour events,” said Thaworn, a two-time Asian Tour number one.
