January 18: Liang Wen-chong of China brilliantly birdied the last hole in the opening round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship to lie two shots off the lead on Thursday.
Liang, the 2007 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner, started his campaign with a three-under-par 69 to trail first round pace setters Justin Rose of England and Jamie Donaldson of Wales at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
Jeev Milkha Singh of India and Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, who have a combined five Order of Merit crowns, were a further shot back in tied 10th.
Thongchai is coming off a third place finish in South Africa last week and is aiming to break inside the top-50 of the Official World Golf Rankings by the end of March to qualify for the Masters Tournament. He is currently ranked 63rd in the world.
