Liang ready to hit top gear

Hong Kong December 4: China’s Liang Wen-chong is ready to shake off the effects of a nagging wrist injury and put on a befitting performance worthy of his status as a three-time Asian Tour winner when the US$1.3million Hong Kong Open tees off on Thursday.
The decorated Chinese star, who holds the proud record of becoming the first Chinese player to win the prestigious Asian Tour Order of Merit title in 2007, also knows a good result at the Hong Kong Golf Club will bring him closer to his other target of earning his place with Team Asia when the inaugural EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM tees off in Malaysia next year.
“It has been a good season so far for me and I’m looking forward to end the year with a bang. The Hong Kong Open has always been one of the key highlights in my schedule each year and hopefully I can do well at the Hong Kong Golf Club this week,” said Liang.
Liang played through the pain barrier courageously before winning his third Asian Tour title in the Philippines a fortnight ago.
The 35-year-old Chinese was forced to withdraw after the second round in Indonesia last week because of his injury.
However, he believes he can be back to contend at Hong Kong’s oldest professional sporting event as the pain has eased significantly.
“I had to withdraw from the second round in Indonesia as it was really painful. But it’s better now as I’ve got some much-needed rest and I should be on my way back to recovery,” said Liang.
Currently in sixth place on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, Liang is aware a good result will bring him inside the top-four on the rankings, opening the door for him to be part of Team Asia that will take on Team Europe in next year’s EurAsia Cup.
“It’ll be an honour to represent Asia in the EurAsia Cup and I want to do my best to get into the team. Hopefully a good week here in Hong Kong will go a long way towards achieving this target,” said Liang.
Team Asia will include the leading four available Asian players from the final 2013 Asian Tour Order of Merit, the leading three available Asian players invited on the basis of their Official World Golf Ranking, the playing captain and two captain’s picks.
Ends.
