New Delhi, November 25: Chinese star Liang Wen-chong will return to the Delhi Golf Club for the first time since his memorable victory in 2008 at the Panasonic Open India which tees off next week.
Liang, who earned the distinction of being the first mainland Chinese to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit in 2007, inked his name in the record books when he carded a 12-under-par 60 to set the record lowest 18-hole score at the venerable venue some eight years ago.
The 38-year-old Chinese, a three-time winner on Tour but not since 2013, will be looking to repeat that magic when he makes his debut at the US$400,000 Asian Tour event, which is celebrating its sixth consecutive edition from December 1 to 4.
“I haven’t been back to the Delhi Golf Club since 2008 so I am really looking forward to it. It is a very impressive course to me. India is a country with rich history and culture too. I have had a great experience the last time I was there.
“I remember hitting my five-wood well and putting well to shoot an opening 60 that week. It is still the best round I have had in my career so far! I am just going to enjoy my game and experience more of the challenging yet pretty course next week,” said Liang.

Liang will form part of the elite field which include defending champion Chiragh Kumar, Thai veteran Prayad Marksaeng, England’s Steve Lewton and Singapore’s Mardan Mamat at the Panasonic Open India.
With the Panasonic Open India being the penultimate event of the 2016 season, players will have everything to play for as they vie to break into top-60 on the final Order of Merit, which is the cut-off mark for players to retain their Tour cards for the 2017 season.
Past champions of the Panasonic Open India include reigning Order of Merit champion Anirban Lahiri (2011), Digvijay Singh (2012), Wade Ormsby (2013), S.S.P. Chawrasia (2014) and Kumar (2015). Australian Ormsby is the only non-Indian to win the event.
The popular Panasonic Open India was launched in 2011 with a prize fund of US$300,000 before increasing to US$400,000 in 2015.
Other notable players include Sri Lanka’s Mithun Perera, who has finished inside top-five for the last two editions, as well as India’s Rahil Gangjee, Jyoti Randhawa and Jeev Milkha Singh, who capped his best result on the Asian Tour this season with a tied-second finish in Indonesia last week.
Ends.
