Liang seeks Asian success

Manila, November 13: China’s Liang Wen-chong will have the chance to take another stab at glory and move up the world rankings when he tees up for the inaugural Resorts World Manila Masters which begins on Thursday.
Liang earned the distinction of becoming the first Chinese player to win the prestigious Asian Tour Order of Merit title in 2007 and has enjoyed several sterling performances this year including three top-five finishes in India, Russia and Austria.
With the Resorts World Manila Masters marked as one of the last few events on his hectic schedule this season, the 35-year-old is hoping to end the year with a flourish at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club.
“It has been a long time since I last came to the Philippines. I think it has been more than 10 years. I’m still trying to cope with my jet lag having flown here from Turkey. However, I’m very excited to be playing here this week,” said Liang.
“I'm very satisfied with my performance both on the Asian Tour, European Tour and other tournaments.  I'm in pretty good shape, even though I'm handling a pretty tight schedule coming to the end of the season. Hopefully I will continue to play well in the upcoming events,” added Liang.
As golf will be making its return to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in three years’ time, Liang knows the importance of chalking up valuable world ranking points on the Asian Tour as they will be the main pathway for players to qualify for the Olympics in 2016.
“One of my goals would be to improve on my world rankings before the Olympics in 2016,” said Liang, who holds the honour of being the first, and so far only, Chinese golfer to have broken into the top-100 on the OWGR with his career high of 57th place in 2010.
“It’s important to take advantage of opportunities given so that you can develop into a better player. You’ve got to take your game beyond China and play across Asia, Europe and America so that you can compete against the best. Only then can you improve,” added the Chinese, who was also the first ever Chinese golfer to make the cut at a Major at The Open in 2008.
Other likely contenders at the newest event on the Asian Tour which is celebrating its milestone 10th season in 2013 include Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang, two-time PGA Tour winner Daniel Chopra of Sweden, Singapore’s Mardan Mamat and Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant, who is the reigning Order of Merit champion.
Filipino duo Angelo Que and Antonio Lascuna will spearhead the local charge and take aim at putting on a good show before heading to Australia to represent the Philippines at the ISPS Handa World Cup of golf.
To further develop the game of golf in the Philippines, 30 spots will be given to players from the ever-growing Philippines Golf Tour (PGT) to compete against the region’s best at the Resorts World Manila Masters.
As the sanctioning body for professional golf in Asia, the Asian Tour believes that partnering the PGT is important to help grow the game domestically, especially in view of golf returning into the Olympics program in 2016.
Ends.
