Dubai, November 28: American David Lipsky believes he stands a good chance of wrapping up the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit title when he competes in the inaugural Dubai Open at The Els Club from December 18 to 21.
“My game is really good, good enough to win anywhere,” said the 26-year-old Lipsky, who currently leads the Merit race with US$682,610, ahead of India’s Anirban Lahiri ($521,104) and Prom Meesawat of Thailand (US$516,512).
“I have a pretty good lead right now and I will be playing in Indonesia and Thailand before coming to Dubai.”
Lipsky won a second Asian Tour at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland, which was co-sanctiond with the European Tour, and also finished tied second in The Championship in Singapore.
He said he was looking forward to a trip to the inaugural Dubai Open.
“The Dubai Open is the final event of the season on the Asian Tour and I will definitely be playing the tournament. It will be fun to play on a course designed by Ernie Els. Maybe I should ask him for some tips,” said Lipsky.
Els, a four-time major winner and a three-time Omega Dubai Desert Classic champion, has indicated second shots will be crucial to going low on his course as the greens are quite tricky.
“The guys are working very hard to ensure the course is in great condition. I am sure the players will have fun in Dubai,” said Els.
“The Dubai Open is awesome for Dubai. I think it is a good place for the Asian Tour to be there,” said Lipsky.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Lipsky was introduced to golf by his parents when he was 10 years old. He played college golf at Northwestern University where he won the 2010 Big Ten individual championship before turning professional in 2011.
The Dubai Open is promoted and organised by golf in DUBAi, which also stages the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters and the MENA Golf Tour.
