Vilamoura, Portugal, October 24: Former Asian Tour Order of Merit champion David Lipsky closed with a flawless six-under-par 65 to grab a share of fifth place at the European Tour’s Portugal Masters on Sunday.
The 28-year-old American, who topped the Asian Tour money list in 2014, compiled a 20-under-par 264 total to finish three shots back of winner Padraig Harrington of Ireland at the Victoria Clube de Golfe.
Asian Tour member Paul Peterson of the United States and honorary member Y.E. Yang of Korea posted rounds of 67 and 71 respectively to finish 13 shots back in tied-50th place while Thailand’s Prom Meesawat came in a further shot back in tied-61st following a 71.
Lipsky moved to 58th on the Race to Dubai rankings following his commendable result. He secured a spot in the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, which is the culmination of the European Tour season, next month.
Australia’s Scott Hend, Marcus Fraser, Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Korean duo Soomin Lee and Jeunghun Wang will also tee up in Dubai as they are all ranked inside top-60 on the rankings, which is the criteria to qualify for the event.
Despite failing to finish inside top-60 to qualify for the prestigious Dubai event, India’s Anirban Lahiri and S.S.P. Chawrasia ensured their playing rights on the European Tour for the next season after taking 84th and 87th places respectively on the money list.
Prom, a two-time Asian Tour winner, unfortunately missed out on his playing privileges on the European Tour for the next season after finishing outside of top-111 on the Race to Dubai rankings following the conclusion of the Portugal Masters on Sunday. He is placed 128th.
