Perth, Australia, February 26: Singapore’s Mardan Mamat made his advances by carding another three-under-par 69 to stake his claim as one of the possible contenders for the ISPS Handa Perth International on Friday.
Like his opening day, the 48-year-old once again stood steady under windy conditions to stay five shots back of second round leaders Brett Rumford of Australia and American Peter Uihlein at the ISPS Handa Perth International which is seeing the return of the best players from the Asian Tour to Australia after seven years.
Starting the day tied for 13, Mardan mixed two bogeys against two birdies for an outward 36. He dropped a shot on 12 but charged home confidently with four birdies in his last five holes to compile a two-day total of six-under-par 138 at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club.
“I'm very fortunate to have a good finish today especially with my birdies on 17 and 18. The wind was blowing in different directions today and it took me some time to get used to it.
“But after the first five holes, I was okay. I made several adjustments especially with the aiming of the ball and overall I'm happy with how things have turned out these last two days,” said Mardan.
Mardan may be hitting the turn of the century soon but still holds the belief that he can still compete at the highest level.
“I'm going to be 50 in two more years, so I'm very happy and fortunate to be in this position. I’ve many years of competitive experience behind me and I’m feeling confident,” said the Singaporean.
The ISPS Handa Perth International is the only golf tournament in Australia to be tri-sanctioned by the Asian Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour.
“It's nice to be back in Perth.  The setup is very good for this tournament and it’s also a good event with all the three tours coming together,” said Mardan.
Ends.
