Mardan seeks successful title defence #RWMMasters

Manila, October 6: Singaporean veteran Mardan Mamat will aim for a career first by staging a successful title defence when he returns for the US$1 million Resorts World Manila Masters from November 19 to 22.
Mardan, who won his fifth Asian Tour title at the inaugural Bashundhara Bangladesh Open earlier in May, will head to the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club next month with renewed confidence after winning in successive seasons for the first time since joining the Asian Tour some two decades ago.
“There are a lot of good memories, just thinking about the Philippines and my time at Manila Southwoods last year,” said Mardan, who won with a staggering 20-under-par 268 winning aggregate last year.
“I’m looking forward to going back to defend my title. For some reason, I like playing at Manila Southwoods as the course is designed by Jack Nicklaus which seems to favour my game. His golf courses reward good shots, especially if you hit it well on the par fives,” added the 47-year-old Singaporean.
Mardan’s first triumph in the region stretches back to 2004 at the Indian Open where he came charging back from three shots to triumph with a closing 65. Subsequently, his four other wins have been impressive start-to-finish victories.
“Out of my five wins, I think I’ve won four times wire-to-wire which is quite impressive for me. I like playing in the Philippines, I think I’ve called it my second home before, as I also won the Philippine Open previously (in 2012) and hopefully I can win the Resorts World Manila Masters again,” he said.
Mardan, who was on the verge of giving up touring life before he won the Resorts World Manila Masters last year, credited his wife, Naz, for her encouragement which made him believe that he can still compete at the highest level in the years to come.
“Now I’m not thinking about ending my career. I want to stay fit and win as many titles as I can. This is a game which I love a lot. I’ve been happy with my mental game. I talk a lot to myself to get motivated to play well,” revealed Mardan.
“I’ve proven myself wrong for wanting to quit before my win in the Philippines last year. I have to credit Naz who told me that I love this game so much that I mustn’t walk away from it.
“She always inspires me and feeds me with positive thoughts. I talked to her (before the final round in Bangladesh) and she sent me a message, saying ‘You are the champion, you are the winner and you are the man’.”
The Resorts World Manila Masters will return for its third edition as the richest golf tournament in the Philippines.
