Marvi makes most of Faldo lesson to win in The Philippines

Cavite, Philippines 25 April: Marvi Monsalve claimed a narrow one-shot victory in the season-opening Faldo Series Philippines Championship at Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Cavite.  The 18-year-old put her triumph down to some valuable tips from Sir Nick Faldo at last month’s Asia Grand Final in China.
“I took a lot of video of Nick’s clinics during the Grand Final and I have been replaying them ever since,” said Monsalve, who became the first Filipino to win the Faldo Series Asia Girls’ Under-21 title at Mission Hills in March.  “I used that experience and confidence to win today and I couldn’t be happier!”
Boosted by an equal tournament-low round of 72 on day two, Monsalve finished on 229 after three rounds at Eagle Ridge to earn herself a return trip to the Asia Grand Final next March.  Joining her in China will be Andres Saldana (Boys’ Under-21), Jonas Christian Magcalayo (Boys’ Under-18), Jose Emmanuel Sajulga (Boys’ Under-16) and Princess Mary Superal (Girls’ Under-16) who each topped their division over 54 holes on the Faldo Course.
More than 60 golfers were in action during the sixth Philippines Championship, including a special ‘Faldo Mini Series’ division of eight to 11-year-olds, introduced to create access at the grassroots level.  Nine-year-old David Guangko celebrated his first-ever hole-in-one.
Established in 1996, 40 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 30 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year.  Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
In September 2013, Faldo will begin taking students at a full-time residential academy for education and golf development in America.  The first ever Faldo Series Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona is also home to the Faldo Series USA and marks the next significant step in the programme’s history.
The 2013/2014 Faldo Series Asia schedule features a record 19 tournaments in 15 countries, including four in mainland China, two in India and others in The Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Brunei, Japan, Pakistan, Indonesia and Thailand.  The season will conclude in March 2014 when Faldo hosts the eighth Faldo Series Asia Grand Final at Mission Hills Golf Club in China.
The Faldo Series Asia is supported by The R&A, ISPS Handa and Mission Hills.  It is endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Federation.
