ANTONIO LASCUNA (PHI) – SECOND ROUND 65 (-7), TOTAL 135 (-9)
Honestly, I didn’t expect to shoot this score because this course is very long golf course for me. My goal was to shoot one or two-under on each day but after nine holes I was five-under! It was amazing. I just continued my form from there.
I was hitting it really good and close to the pin. After 17 holes I was like ‘wow’. Maybe now I can aim for a pair of three-unders in the weekend. I’ve played here many times but I’ve always struggled except on one occasion (finished tied 20th in 2012).
My birdies were all from inside 15 feet. I’m happy with my form now. I struggled with a back injury last year but I’m fully recovered after resting for a whole month in December. I won in the Philippines last week and I had a couple of good results.
I’m happy to be on top the leaderboard among all these good players! I played in the World Cup of Golf last year and that was a good experience for me. I played with K.J. Choi in the third round and it was fun.
DANNY WILLETT (ENG) – SECOND ROUND 66 (-6), TOTAL 136 (-8)
Danny Willett – Round 2 66 (-8)
Q: You must be pretty please with that?
A: Yeah it’s a good day’s work. We got 17 holes in yesterday which was nice, so I only have one to play when I came back this morning and managed to birdie it. Then back out again and I was really solid. I holed putts when I needed to and the weather was pretty good – it stayed relatively cool and it’s just warming up now.
Q: What aspect of your game has pleased you most?
A: My iron play has been really good. Every time I’ve been in the fairway I’ve put it relatively close. Round here, you need to be on the fairway, so I’ve been able to knock a few in close and hole a few putts.
Q: Traditionally it’s a very low score that wins it here.
A: Yeah it’s usually upwards of 16. I finished third a few years ago and think I was about 14 under. So you need a good week. It depends what the guys do this afternoon, but I’m up there and in with a shout.
Q: Did it suit you better going out early?
A: Yeah it was nice, but there was a breeze and at one stage we thought a storm might come in. But out here you can’t complain if it’s high 20s when it’s usually 40 degrees.
ANDY SULLIVAN (ENG) SECOND ROUND 67 (-5), TOTAL 137 (-7)
Q: Some great conditions for low scoring today?
A: Yeah it was perfect. I was here early this morning to finish off my first round. I had five holes left and there was just no wind out there. The greens were cut perfectly too, so I was able to get off to a quick start and carry on from there in round two.
Q: A 66 will probably be one of the best scores of the day?
A: I hope so. I just hope the leaders don’t get too far ahead this afternoon. Hopefully we can get four rounds in.
Q: Your first round was a mixed bag but today was flawless –w hat was the difference?
A: I don’t know really because I practised great this week and was swinging it really well. I was a bit surprised that I had a bit of a sluggish start. But I got my head on for the last few holes last night and started well this morning. Like I said, I’m swinging it really well in practice so it’s just a matter of taking it onto the course.
Q: What aspect of your game is being tested most this week?
A: Endurance, for me. No, the fairways are such a premium here. I’ve hit it in the rough a few times and caught a couple of fliers, so you’ve got to keep it on the fairways.
Q: Hopes for the weekend?
A: We’ll see what happens. Hopefully the leaders won’t be too far away at the end of the day and I’ll have a chance of chasing them down tomorrow.
ARNOND VONGVANIJ (THA) – SECOND ROUND 71 (-1), TOTAL 141 (-3)
I’m very happy because it hasn’t really gone my way when I played on this golf course before. It was always a grind out there for me. I didn’t swing very well here previously and it was hard for me to get over that.
I stayed very focus and kept my concentration all the time. It is more tiring than usual but it is worth it. I practised quite a bit and played in some local events to prepare for the Asian Tour events.
I’ve been trying to work out more in the gym and my body was so sore. I took a break last week and did stretching to get my body fresh for this week. The weather here is very hot and it takes a lot of energy out of you so I knew I needed to preserve some energy.
I’ve played in Malaysia many times and I’m aware of the rain delays and heat. I set my mind up to expect the worst! We got really lucky for 15 holes because the dark clouds were looming. Thankfully it wasn’t that hot and it didn’t rain today.
It was a great comeback from the Asian team in the EurAsia Cup. Hopefully we can do even better next time.
KIRADECH APHIBARNRAT (THA) – SECOND ROUND 71 (-1), TOTAL 142 (-2)
I’m hitting the ball better. I lost a couple of shots but I made a lot of birdies which is a positive sign. I made some mistakes and some good shots. It was a mixed round so I have to work on the mistakes.
My short game wasn’t good enough. When I hit a perfect approach, I was making birdies from inside six feet so that was good. But my swing is not in good shape at the moment.
I don’t think I will be going to the driving range. I don’t feel well so I will go back to the room, take some medication and rest. I want to focus in the last two rounds and enjoy my game.
I want to play the same game but maybe with a sharper short game! I’m hitting my irons close to the hole so I hope to continue that and give myself more birdie opportunities.
