St Andrews, Scotland, July 18: The Open will witness a Monday finish for the first time since 1988 after gusty wind conditions disrupted play for much of the day on Saturday.
The second round of the world’s oldest Major could not be completed on schedule earlier on Friday as more than three hours of play were lost due to torrential morning rain.
It did resume briefly on Saturday morning until the howling 45mph gale eventually forced play to be suspended for more than 10 hours at the Old Course in St Andrews.
Anirban Lahiri of India Anirban Lahiri of India
India’s Anirban Lahiri, a seven-time Asian Tour winner, will carry the Tour’s hopes as he is the second highest-placed Asian in tied-14th position after Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama who returned to sign for a second round six-under-par 66.
Joining Lahiri in making the cut, which was set at even-par, are Asian Tour members Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, reigning Order of Merit champion, David Lipsky of the United States and Australia’s Marcus Fraser.
Lahiri is five shots back of second round leader Dustin Johnson of the United States, who was one of the 39 players who resumed their round at 7am (local time).
The American, who is seeking to overcome his heart-breaking loss at the U.S. Open by securing his first Major this week, posted a 69 to take sole possession of the lead with his two-day total of 10-under-par 134.
"This morning when we started, it was almost impossible, but managed to hang in there, and then when we just went out and restarted, it was very tough, but managed to make some good pars and then birdie the last hole. So it was a good way to finish the day," said Johnson.
Ends.
