Taipei, October 2: Read to find out what players have to say following their opening rounds at the US$650,000 Mercuries Taiwan Masters on Thursday.
LIONEL WEBER (FRA) – FIRST ROUND 68 (-4)
My putting was really good. I only took nine putts on the back nine (started from 10th). I think this is the first time I’ve got only nine putts in nine holes. It was like a perfect day with good playing conditions so it’s great for me to play four-under-par 68 today.
I think you have to take advantage of the par-fives to play well here. You need to play smart on this golf course. You can’t be too aggressive out there, especially on the par-fours and par-threes. Your short game has to be good too.
I came to Taipei one week earlier for a vacation with my best friend. We stayed in the city and went to Fulong beach to relax. We had a good time and I felt good coming to the tournament this week.
It’s my second year playing on the Asian Tour. I’m currently ranked 70th on the Order of Merit. I will have to put in more hard work to finish top-60 at the end of the season. That’s my aim for now. I will try to play my best game in every tournament.
NICHOLAS FUNG (MAS) – FIRST ROUND 70 (-2)
I started very well today. I recovered well despite dropping a shot on the third hole. I didn’t expect myself to birdie the par-three 10th hole. I thought I wouldn’t even par that hole because that hole was really long. I hit my tee shot to about one-feet from the hole and almost got a hole-in-one! That has got to be the best hole for me today.
It’s my first time playing on this course. I can’t complain. A lot of my friends told me that I have to come and play this tournament because it suits my game a lot. It’s not a long course and you just have to keep your ball straight. I guess that explains my good round today. Having said that, I do not want to give myself any expectations. I just want to focus on my game and not think about anything else. Hopefully I can keep up with the good form till Sunday.
STEVE LEWTON (ENG) – FIRST ROUND 70 (-2)
My short game was really good. I chipped and putted very nicely. I dropped two shots on the sixth hole after hitting the ball out of bounds but I recovered well on the back nine. I hit very good iron shots which kept me close. It was not as windy as normal today but it’s still as tricky as ever. You have to hit your ball onto the fairways and greens to score out there.
The season’s been pretty good for me so far. Hopefully I can continue to play well like how I did at the start of the year. I am aiming to finish in top-10 on the Order of Merit at the end of the season. I still have to put in a lot of hard work to get there.
PARIYA JUNHASAVASDIKUL (THA) – FIRST ROUND 70 (-2)
I went out today feeling really exhausted. This is my fifth event in a row and I’m feeling very tired. I guess I got into the process that I’m very tired and I just focus on what I needed to do. This course hasn’t been treating me well since I won in 2010. I missed the cut in 2011 and 2013 and only finished tied-33rd in 2012 so I’m quite surprised with my result today.
PROM MEESAWAT (THA) – FIRST ROUND 71 (-1)
It’s always very challenging playing on this golf course. It’s a very tricky course and it’s difficult to score. I’m always happy to shoot under par here. I had a good rhythm out there. I hit the ball well and I putted very well today. The greens are a little softer probably because of the rain yesterday. You have to keep the ball on the fairways and control your ball well on the greens because it’s quite firm.
I am hoping to ride on the good form since winning the Yeangder TPC three weeks ago. I had a lot of good memories from winning that event and it’s good to come back to Taipei this week. I will play my best and just enjoy my game out there.
