Cha-am, Hua Hin, Thailand, February 13: Wolmer Murillo of Venezuela took advantage of a putting tip from a local coach as he posted a sizzling second round six-under-par 65 at the Qualifying School Final Stage presented by Sports Authority of Thailand on Thursday.
Murillo compiled a two-day total of six-under-par 137 to stay two shots back from early pace setters Seb Gros of France and overnight leader Nathan Holman of Australia, who returned with 67 and 72 respectively at the par-72 Imperial Lakeview Golf Club.
Australian Nicholas Cullen settled for third place after signing for a 67 while Murillo took a share of fourth alongside Canadian Stuart Anderson and Naomi Ohta of Japan.
Murillo, who traded one eagle, five birdies and a lone bogey at the par-71 Springfield Royal Country Club, rode on a hot putter to put himself in prime position to finish inside the top-40 and earn an Asian Tour card for the 2014 season.
“I managed to stay focus throughout. My putting was great today. I saw Pom-pet before starting off yesterday. I’ve got a couple of friends working with him, such as Lindsay Renolds and Pavit Tangkamolprasert. He gave me a couple of tips and I’m glad that worked out very well!” said the 32-year-old Venezuelan.
“I started to hole putts out there and I got more comfortable with my game as compared to yesterday. The eagle on par-five ninth that I made from about nine-feet away with a six-iron made a difference today. I felt great. Staying concentrated helps I guess and I was trying to get better and better shots,” added Murillo.
The top-80 and ties will progress to the final two rounds which will be played only at the Springfield Royal and the top-40 and ties will earn an Asian Tour card for the 2014 season after the final round.
Ends.
