In a country where cricket is the religion of all sports, Siddikur Rahman will break the barriers when he represents golf minnows Bangladesh in the Olympic Games in August. Read what it means to him to turn a dream into a reality.
1. What does it mean to you to try to win a medal and represent your country at the world's greatest sporting spectacle?
To me, the Olympics will be an achievement if I can get into Rio. If I can win any medal, I think it will be a great record for my country. Previously, no Bangladeshi has qualified for the Olympics although there have been athletes from my country receiving wild cards to participate. I’m really inspired to try to qualify for the Games and achieve one of my dreams.
2. Compared to your other milestones/achievements in your career, where does competing in the Olympics rank for you?
Honestly, I’ve not had any idea about the Olympic Games. It is a prestigious event and the medal winners have their own stories to tell. Once I have known more about the Olympics, it has inspired me. The Olympics is the top of the tree for sports.
3. Does winning an Olympic medal surpass the joy and expectations of winning on the Asian Tour or any other Major Tours in the world?
I would imagine so. It’s a huge competition, a lot of top class golfers will compete in Rio and if I can win a medal, that would be the best thing to happen in my life.
4. Are you planning to spend some time off and watch other sports while you are in Rio for the Olympics?
I love football and tennis, so I might watch some of the games if I have the time.
5. Growing up as a boy, did you dream of being in the Olympics?
When I was a boy, I didn’t know much. But as I grew up, I started hearing more about it although I didn’t know how prestigious it is. But now, I can feel that it’s a big thing. I know more about the Olympics and if I can get into Rio, it’ll be a great honour for me. I never dreamed about getting in and I’m now dreaming more and more about it.
6. Who is your favourite Olympic athletic?
I know about Usain Bolt, the sprinter and I’ve heard a lot about swimmer Michael Phelps as I believe he holds numerous Olympic records. I can’t imagine one guy can win eight gold medals in one Olympics which I believe is a world record.
7. If you can compete in another Olympic sport, which one would it be?
It would be football as I used to play a lot of football when I was a kid. Played during my school days and I can play it pretty good.
8. What's your most memorable Olympic memory?
I thought it was a normal event those days until I grew older and I started hearing stories about it. I never thought it was a prestigious event until I got a lot older.
