June 3: Noh Seung-yul of Korea, the 2010 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner, and EurAsia Cup star Kim Hyung-sung qualified for the U.S. Open in style through a two-round Sectional Qualifying on Monday.
Noh, who holds the distinction as the youngest ever Asian Tour number one, aced the fourth hole in the second round for a one-under-par 69 to share first place with Justin Leonard and Justin Thomas on five-under-par 137.
Noh will make his third appearance in the U.S. Open after finishing tied 40th and 30th in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
Kim, who was part of Team Asia in the inaugural EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM in Malaysia in March, continued his rich vein of form to earn a first appearance at the U.S. Open next week at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.
The lanky Korean posted a two-under-par 70 in the Sectional Qualifying which was played at Brookside Golf & Country Club and Scioto Country Club to finish tied ninth and claim one of 16 tickets to the year’s second Major tournament.
Asian Tour honorary member K.J. Choi narrowly missed out on a play-off for the final two U.S. Open tickets by one shot.
Ends.
