June 2: Juvic Pagunsan of the Philippines earned a second appearance at The Open Championship after finishing runner-up at the Open Qualifying Series Japan – Mizuno Open on Sunday.
The 2011 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner closed with a two-under-par 70 for a 12-under-par 276 total to finish three shots behind the champion Jang Dong-kyu of Korea.
Kim Hyung-tae of Korea and Tomohiro Kondo of Japan claimed the last two tickets to The Open after finishing third and fourth respectively and they will join Jang and Pagunsan at Royal Liverpool from July 17 to 20.
The 36-year-old Pagunsan will make a welcome return to The Open Championship after his debut appearance at the 2012 edition at Royal Lytham & St Annes where he finished tied 72nd.
“This is my second Open. I just made the cut in 2012 but I played all four days. It's a great honour to play in The Open and I hope to have the opportunity to play well,” said Pagunsan, who has one victory on the Asian Tour.
Reigning Asian Tour number one Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand is exempt into the Open by virtue of his Order of Merit success last season while countryman Thongchai Jaidee will also tee up at Royal Liverpool through the top-30 category of the final 2013 Race to Dubai Rankings.
EurAsia Cup team Asia member Kim Hyung-sung of Korea is exempt after finishing second on the Japan Golf Tour money list in 2013 while Asian Tour honorary members Ernie Els of South Africa and Korea’s Y.E. Yang are also in the field. Asian Tour member Yoshinobu Tsukada of Japan qualified for the Open through the Open Qualifying Series – Asia earlier this year.
Ends.
