Que and Siddikur prepare for title assault

Manila, March 7: Local ace Angelo Que will draw confidence from his past success at The Country Club when he takes aim at a fourth Asian Tour title at the US$300,000 Solaire Open next week.
The bubbly Filipino has a superb track record at highly rated venue where he has won three domestic events and finished runner-up once, making him one the hot favourites to win the Asian Tour event from March 13 to 16.
Que will be joined by a host of Asian Tour stalwarts including India’s newest rising star Rashid Khan, who won the season-opening SAIL-SBI Open on home soil last week, talented Thai Arnond Vongvanij, Singaporean veteran Mardan Mamat and highly rated Baek Seuk-hyun of Korea.
Bangladeshi star Siddikur Rahman and Thai veteran Prayad Marksaeng, who will represent Team Asia in the inaugural EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM against Europe in Malaysia later this month, will also be amongst the top contenders at the Solaire Open.
Filipino Cassius Casas, who earned his Asian Tour card at Qualifying School last month, the evergreen Frankie Minoza, Miguel Tabuena, Jay Bayron, the 2012 Asian Development Tour (ADT) Order of Merit winner and Antonio Lascuna will spearhead the home challenge alongside with Que.
“It is a good venue and a bit of a change from Wack Wack Golf and Country Club. It is a nice course and it is quite wide but very windy. It can be challenging but I think everybody will enjoy it. If I drive the ball well and hole the putts, then I will do well,” said Que.
“I’m playing at home and I’ve always done well. I like the feeling that everybody is behind you to support you,” he added.
Que will enter the Solaire Open in high confidence after enjoying his best season in 2013 where he finished a career high 13th on the Order of Merit, thanks to six top-10s.
“I’m very happy with last year because it was my best season in about 10 years. I could have done better but I can’t complain. I had a great year. A win would have been better but finishing 13th on the Order of Merit is a good achievement,” said the 35-year-old.
In 2014, Que has set himself a goal to win his fourth title on the region’s premier Tour but he admits that it will not be easy.
“Winning on this Tour is getting tougher and tougher. Back in the day, you shoot 15-under and you will win a tournament. Now if you shoot the same score, you will be tied for fifth. It is such a different game now in Asia. Players are getting better and they are getting more aggressive,” he said.
Siddikur will be hoping to avenge his play-off defeat to Khan in India last week. Another strong showing at the Solaire Open will also boost his preparation for the EurAsia Cup, which is he looking forward to representing Team Asia.
“The way I’m hitting the ball now, I’m quite happy. My short game is going well. I also made some mistakes (in Delhi) on the last day, and couldn’t hole my putts from 10 feet. I missed some chances and if I had holed some, I could have won. But it’s okay, there has to be a winner and a loser,” said Siddikur.
