Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia, May 31: Filipino strongman Angelo Que is relishing a return to his happy hunting ground when he takes aim at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters from June 20 to 23.
The colourful Que, who is a three-time Asian Tour winner, will be joined at the Seri Selangor Golf Club by a star-studded cast comprising of Scott Hend and Wade Ormsby of Australia, Chawalit Plaphol of Thailand, Lin Wen-tang of Chinese Taipei and India’s rising star Anirban Lahiri, who are all winners already this season.
Local ace Danny Chia and Shaaban Hussin will spearhead the Malaysian challenge alongside Ben Leong, who will make a return to competitive golf after a lengthy injury spell, S. Siva Chandhran and Sukree Othman.
Que is excited at the prospect of teeing up at the RM1.2 million (approximately US$400,000) Asian Tour event where he will be aiming to end a three-year title drought. He has enjoyed much success in Malaysia where he has won slightly over US$260,000 since 2004 which includes winning at the 2010 Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters.
“I’m excited to go back to the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters. I’m happy that it is returning to the Seri Selangor Golf Club. I won there before and I know the course well,” he said.
“Malaysia is like my second home. I think I’ve made more money in Malaysia compared to the Philippines! I feel comfortable when I’m playing in Malaysia. I don’t know why,” added the bubbly Filipino.
After switching to new golf clubs earlier this year, Que has posted two top-five finishes on the region’s premier Tour, which is celebrating its milestone 10th season in 2013. He is still searching for a fourth Asian Tour title but reckons he will need a bit of luck to secure his goal.
“So far I’m getting there with my new equipment. Every time you change equipment, you need time to adapt. I think I need a lot of luck to get my fourth win. I think anybody that wins need it. You also need every aspect of your game to click,” said the 34-year-old.
Australia’s Ormsby, who won his first Asian Tour title at Panasonic Open India in April, hopes to continue his winning run when he heads to Malaysia, which will host a total of four tournaments on the Asian Tour this season.
“I’ve played in over 200 tournaments worldwide and to get my first win takes the monkey off my back. I really wanted to win (in India) and I’m glad I did that,” said Ormsby, currently ranked seventh on the Order of Merit.
Worldwide Holdings, a 100 per cent subsidiary of PKNS – the development arm of the state of Selangor – will title sponsor the Selangor Masters for the sixth successive year. The state-linked company has an impressive portfolio of businesses which include property development and investment, environmental management services and investment holding in Selangor.
The weekend rounds of the tournament will be telecast live on the Asian Tour’s global platform which reaches over 200 countries and 650 million homes.
