Queen's Cup Rd 1 - What they said

THURSDAY, JUNE 5
POOM SAKSANSIN (THA) – FIRST ROUND 66 (-5)
I hit my tee shots good and it gave me the opportunity to make a good score. My putting was also very good. All my putts were from about five yards and I managed to save par on four or five holes. Conditions were difficult as the winds kept changing. I decided what club I would play and just hit the shot. I committed myself to every shot.
I played in a pro-am event here in Samui earlier this year and this is my first time playing in the Queen’s Cup. It’s my first year as a professional. I always play good in the first round as I’m always trying to make the cut. But this week, I’m thinking that if I miss the cut here, it won’t matter. In my other tournaments, I have finished 50th or 60th which gets me nothing. If I miss the cut, it’s okay, I want to finish higher.
My thinking is a bit different this week. But I’m sure I’m still thinking about making the cut as well. I’m 21 years old.
I played for the national team for four years. I won the team gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar and the bronze in the individual event.  I turned professional as I want to get money. I didn’t want to ask my mum for money anymore as she’s supported my career.
I’m still behind the top players. I’m hitting it too short. My driver carries about 250 yards but the others easily carry 270 yards and above. I need to improve on that. I’m always thinking of trying to make the cut and just play some good golf.
CHINNARAT PHADUNGSIL (THA) – FIRST ROUND 68 (-3)
I had a good start, chipped in for birdie on the first hole (10th hole) and then hit a lot of greens. Missed many putts on my front nine. But managed to get one birdie on 16 and an eagle on 18 from about 15 feet. Hit a six iron after a good drive there.
On the first hole, I had a three putt, which is an easy bogey. Back nine, I didn’t hit it too good. It was very windy before the rain came in. I missed par on nine. Found the rough and it was an easy shot but the wind changed after I hit my shot and I missed the green.
Happy to play this course but you have to be careful. You have to be thinking all the time.
DONLAPHATCHAI NIYOMCHON (THA) – FIRST ROUND 68 (-3)
My approach shots and putting were good today. It was difficult as conditions were tough. But I had good rhythm with my swing.
I made a really good birdie on the fifth hole, hit a rescue to about eight feet. That’s a tough hole to get too.
Last year, I got through Qualifying School and played in the 2013 season. But I didn’t play well and had to go back to Qualifying School but missed the Final Stage. I’m still learning and gaining experience.
I turned pro in 2011 and played on the local tour, I’m 24 this year. I need to step up on my game as the other golfers around my age have improved a lot. I feel it is difficult as there is strong competition from amongst the young players. I’m still short of experience and need to learn more.
RICHARD T. LEE (CAN) – FIRST ROUND 69 (-2)
It was a good round today, made four birdies and two bogyes out there. The delay allowed me to get in some food and some water in me and I rested well. I finished it off with two birdies. Definitely nice to finish strong. Hit a good drive on 17 when it started to get windy that time and hit a sandwedge to five feet. On 18, had an eagle putt but missed it.
It’s my second time in Samui. It’s a challenging course definitely. All the players are frustrated by the winds and the slopes on the course too. Putts are not easy to make out there. All you have to do is hit good drives and hit your second shots well. It’s the same as with other courses.
Nothing has changed since my win. I still have the same mindset. Now I want to get the second win and thereafter, get my third win. I just want to keep playing well.
SHANKAR DAS (IND) – FIRST ROUND 70 (-1)
I started my round good but finishing the round, there was a lot of wind and rain. I was in two minds on what to hit on the ninth tee. I hit it right and the second shot hit a rock and went further back. Hit my fourth shot to the edge and then play was suspended. I came back out and chipped and putted for a double bogey.
I made a mistake with my club selection. I was thinking whether to go with three wood or rescue. Went with a three wood and hit a bad shot.
I hit it generally good today. Missed a few putts coming in, missed three chances coming in. It’s my first time on this course. It’s a tight course which you need to have steady drives.
