Koh Samui, Thailand, May 27: The popular Queen’s Cup will return for its seventh edition on the Asian Tour at the Santiburi Samui Country Club on the holiday isle of Koh Samui from June 18 to 21, organisers announced today.
Bangkok Airways, in collaboration with the Sports Authority of Thailand, Thailand PGA and the Asian Tour, jointly announced details of the upcoming US$300,000 event in a press launch here today where Thai star Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand will defend his crown.
Songkrot Palakawong Na Ayuthaya Director – Corporate Affairs & Events, Bangkok Airways, said, “We are particularly excited to organise this tournament for the seventh year in honour of our beloved Queen Sirikit.
“We have always strived to take Thai golf onto the international level. Moreover, we hope the tournament will draw a larger number of golf enthusiasts which consequently will stimulate Samui’s tourism.
“The previous years’ tournaments were very well received and followed closely by golf fans from around the region which Samui has already become a new destination for golf tourism.”
The tournament’s traditional curtain-raiser Pro-Am will be held on June 17 to give an exclusive chance to local amateur golfers to compete alongside the Asian Tour’s top professional golfers. The event will be broadcast live on True Sport and a one-hour highlights package will also be produced and broadcast on the Asian Tour television platform. The event will also be featured on the Asian Tour Golf Show.
Since making its debut on the Asian Tour in 2009, the Queen’s Cup has been dominated by Thai golfers, with the likes of Chinnarat Phadungsil, Chawalit Plaphol, Prayad Marksaeng and Thaworn Wiratchant (twice) winning the event. The only international golfer who triumphed in Samui was Japan’s Tetsuji Hiratsuka.
Next month’s Queen’s Cup will include many famous Thai golfers and is also expected to attract the likes of Bangladeshi star Siddikur Rahman and Singapore’s Mardan Mamat.
Mike Kerr, CEO, Asian Tour said: “On behalf of the Asian Tour and our players, I would like to express our fullest appreciation to Bangkok Airways and Sports Authority of Thailand for their wonderful support in staging the Queen’s Cup.
“Our players always enjoy competing in the Queen’s Cup as it is played on a truly challenging golf course while Samui also offers the opportunity for them to enjoy the many attractions on the famous holiday isle.
“Since the joining the Asian Tour Schedule in 2009, the Queen’s Cup has produced worthy champions such as Thaworn Wiratchant, Prayad Marksaeng, Chawalit Plaphol and Chinnarat Phadungsil and we look forward to herald another great champion next month.”
