Manila, November 21: Local star Angelo Que fired a bogey-free six-under-par 66 in the third round of the US$1 million Resorts World Manila Masters to give himself a fighting chance of winning his home tournament.
Que, who started the day eight shots off the pace, moved to within six back of third round leader Hung Chien-yao with a six-birdie round at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club.
After opening consecutive 71s, the 36-year-old produced a superb back nine of 31 for an eight-under-par 208 total to become the highest-placed Filipino in tied-12th position with one round to play.
Que, a three-time winner on the Asian Tour but not since 2010, took advantage of favourable scoring conditions in the morning to cap his best effort of the week to date in what is the richest event in the Philippines.
“It wasn’t windy, compared to the last two rounds. I am hitting the ball better too. I guess I was thinking better out there. Also, less wind helped. It was really windy the last two days. Playing with less wind made it much easier,” said the likeable Filipino.
Que, who holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-three fifth, credited tweaks made to his putting technique for his commendable round.
“I switched back to my own style of putting which I have used a long time ago but I haven’t used it lately and it kind of worked for me. I am focusing more on my shoulders when I roll in the putt,” he said.
Countryman Jhonnel Ababa signed for a 71 to lie in tied-17th position while Miguel Tabuena battled to a 72 to sit in equal 24th place.
