Record US$2.75m for 2013 Maybank Malaysian Open


Kuala Lumpur, September 6: The prestigious Maybank Malaysian Open will offer a record US$2.75 million in total prize fund in its 2013 edition from March 21 to 24, organisers announced.

The national Open will be held once again at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, which crowned South African star Louis Oosthuizen as champion in this year’s event in April which offered US$2.5 million in prize money.

In the past, the premier event has attracted star players from around world with the likes of Oosthuizen, Martin Kaymer, Charl Schwartzel, Alvaro Quiros and Matteo Manassero. It has also produced new generation of champions who have gone on to become stars in their own right.

Maybank, the title sponsor of the event, has played a pivotal role in expanding the reach of the game in the country and region.

Mohamed Adam Wee, Chief Marketing Officer of Maybank, said: “We are upping the ante of the tournament by offering a prize purse of USD2.75 million. We are confident that this will fire up the competitive spirit of the golfers. Spectators can also expect an electrifying tournament come March 2013.”

Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) president Admiral (R) Tan Sri Dato' Setia Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor said: “The Maybank Malaysian Open has established itself as one of the major golf events to look out for. In this region, it is a golf event that has drawn international players and spectators alike, due to its world-class status and world-recognized stature. The increase in prize money will definitely up the prestige of the event and heighten the performance of the golfers”.

The event is sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
