#RWMMasters2016 Rd 1: What they said

Manila, November 10: Read what leading contenders have to say after their first round at the US$1 million Resorts World Manila Masters on Thursday.

Jyoti Randhawa (Ind), First round 64 (-8)

There was no wind today so it can get fairly easy on this golf course when there’s no wind. Most of the par-fives are reachable with wedges when there are no winds. And that three to four club difference does make lots of difference. This golf course seems to set itself up nicely for my style of play so that helps a bit. But having said that, you still have to play good golf to do well and I did play some good golf today. I know what I’ve to do for the next three days and hopefully I can be playing like this for the next three days.

When I bogeyed the second hole, I thought, there goes my good round. But then I realized, hang on, I still got a couple of holes left. I hit a great second shot and made a great putt for eagle and that was when I knew I could finish strong coming in. I really don’t have anything to lose right now. If I don’t keep my card on the Asian Tour, I still get to keep my card because of ADT. That has taken a lot of weight off my shoulders.

Lin Wen-tang (Tpe), First Round 64 (-8)

It was a good day and I came into this round feeling very good about my game. There was not much wind in the morning and that really helped. I was impatient and wanted to chase the leader at that stage. I three-putted the 17 and was lucky I managed to eagle the last. I putted well. I was lucky. The conditions on the green were excellent today. I’m happy and it helps as I just enjoying my game and catching up with old friends here.

Danthai Boonma (Tha), First Round 64 (-8)

I putted really well. It was not windy in the morning and I was able to attack the pins. I gave myself lots of birdie chances and managed to take advantage of them. It’s a good feeling whenever you play a good round like this.

Hung Chien-yao (Tpe), First Round 65 (-7)

I didn’t expect myself to get off to such a fast start because I woke up way too early at 3.40am today. It has been a long time since I last woke up so early. I was still very sleepy but feeling relaxed. So that was a nice surprise. Before coming over here, I looked at the mirror and told myself not to put too much pressure. Golf is hard and you cannot win all the time. So just go out there and have fun. I like the course here and it feels like home to me.

Steve Lewton (Eng), First Round 65 (-7)

I hit the ball really solid and I putted very nicely. Every time I got into trouble, I managed to save par by holing a good putt which kept the momentum going nicely. This golf course reminds me of the time during my university days in America. I feel like I’ve been playing on a lot of these courses before. They kind of suit me, really. I’ve been struggling lately and a win here would do wonders. It’s nice to get out there today and get a good score today.

Frankie Minoza (Phi), First Round 67 (-5)

I didn’t hit the ball that well today but I managed to putt well.My irons are good but same cannot be said for my driver. It was tough to read at line at times because when you are getting old, your eyesight tends to get poor too! But I’m so happy I managed to finish at five-under. I’m getting old. I’m just enjoying the game. I think I’m just so lucky today and I hope this form will continue right through Sunday.

Jeev Milkha Singh (Ind), First Round 68 (-4)

I started off a little slow in my first few holes but I came back pretty strongly after that. I made six birdies and two bogeys for a 68. I’m happy with my round. I holed lots of putts and hit the ball very well today. I’m not really injury-free yet but I’m working not only on my fitness but also my game. I can feel the results are around the corner and I just need to stay patient and keep working on the right stuff. One week is all it takes to turn around that corner. It was not very windy this morning and I managed to take advantage of it.
