Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia, June 22: The General Manager of Seri Selangor Golf Club, Hairul Zaini has hailed the impact of staging an Asian Tour event at Malays’as first bona fide public golf club.
Hairul, who has been with Seri Selangor for 15 years, said the perception of the club as a public course changed tremendously when it first staged an Asian Tour event at the 2008 Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters.
“We wanted to prove that as a public golf course, we are  capable of hosting an international golf tournament. By having an Asian Tour event, Seri Selangor has enjoyed huge international publicity for its challenging layout and tough playing conditions,” said Hairul.
“We have indeed seen a significant change compared to the 2007 Selangor Masters when it was first staged as a local event,” he added.
He said the popularity of Seri Selangor grew when Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand featured in the 2008 edition of the Selangor Masters. Malaysia’s Ben Leong won the tournament in a head-to-head duel with the decorated Thai star..
“Many great players have played here because of the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters. We have seen players such as Thongchai, Chapchai Nirat, Thaworn Wiratchant, Noh Seung-yul and Shiv Kapur playing here and their presence alone have helped promote the club,” said Hairul.
The Asian Tour, which celebrates its 10th season this year, strives to promote the host venues on its Schedule as well as improve playing conditions.
“We have worked with some of the Asian Tour Tournament Directors and they have been very helpful bytelling the club what needs to be done to improve the course conditions. We take their advice seriously and try our best to maintain the standard of the course even when there’s no tournament on,” added Hairul.
In 2012, the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters enjoyed its first ever live telecast when the final two rounds of the tournament was beam live on the established Asian Tour Television platform. The on-going edition is also being beamed live to over 650 million homes worldwide this weekend.
