Shanghai, April 27: Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai has been confirmed as host venue for the prestigious WGC-HSBC Champions in 2016.
The Sheshan International Club Golf Club has hosted the tournament 10 times since the inaugural event in 2005 and has consistently received praise from players and officials for the world-class condition of the course and facilities as well as the challenging nature of the design.
David Howell, who won the inaugural HSBC Champions in 2005, and most recently played in the WGC-HSBC Champions in 2015, commented: “The course has grown in reputation in tandem with the tournament.
“It is one of the best courses we play in terms of every aspect from its world class condition to its fair but challenging set up. It is always immaculately prepared and the finishing stretch has provided so much drama over the years that I know everyone will be really pleased to hear that we will be returning to Sheshan.”
Giles Morgan, Global Head of Sponsorship at HSBC commented: “When we first brought HSBC Champions to China in 2005, our ambition was to create a world-class international golf tournament in an emerging market – more than a decade on this event has been one of the main catalysts for the growth of golf in Asia. Chairman Richard Cheung and everyone working at the Sheshan International Golf Club have played such an important role in helping us grow the stature of this tournament into one of the elite World Golf Championship series.
“Their commitment to providing the best possible stage for the world’s best golfers to compete on, as well as their wonderfully warm welcome, has helped us to build the WGC-HSBC Champions into the world-class tournament it is today.”
Defending champion Russell Knox added: “I am delighted to hear that I will be able to defend my title at Sheshan International. Obviously I am a big fan of the course and definitely think it is an advantage to defend at a course where I have won. It is a popular venue with all the players and this news will be really well received.”
Richard Cheung, Chairman of Shanghai Sheshan International Golf Club said: “We are delighted to confirm that we will remain the home of the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions. We are so proud to host this important global event and, having enjoyed 10 fantastic tournaments here, look forward to many more. We are delighted with our strong partnership with HSBC, IMG and the International Federation of PGA Tours.”

About HSBC Golf Sponsorships
HSBC’s global commitment to golf encompasses all levels of the game, from grassroots to elite. HSBC is a proud patron of The Open Championship and this partnership with The R&A creates a centre of gravity to a global golf portfolio that spans HSBC's key markets.  In Asia, HSBC has spearheaded the arrival of world class golf events with its flagship World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in Shanghai and HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore.  The $8.5m World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions is renowned as ‘Asia’s Major’ and has made such an impact, that Rory McIlroy describes China as “an unstoppable force in world golf.”  HSBC has been co-title sponsor of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship since 2010 and the event has quickly become one of the biggest events on the European PGA Tour.  However, underpinning those international flagship events is a longer-term ambition to create a legacy from HSBC’s global tournaments through its sponsorship of youth development and grassroots programmes. In China, HSBC supports the HSBC China Junior Golf Program, a sustainable long-term structure and framework upon which the future of Chinese golf is being built. In Hong Kong, HSBC supports the HSBC Hong Kong Junior Golf Programme, a structured pathway for children to try the sport for the first time, develop their skills and, for those talented enough, the chance to represent Hong Kong on the international stage. In the UK, HSBC is sponsor of HSBC Golf Roots - The Golf Foundation's national development programme which promotes the sport in schools, helps youngsters into clubs and uses golf to promote important life skills.
