Singh, a former two-time Asian Tour number one, has won on six occasions on the region’s premier Tour and multiple times in Japan and Europe but it was his win at the Singapore Open in 2008 which he would rate as one of his most famous victories.
“My win here in 2008 was one of my biggest victories in Asia and I’ll always cherish that moment. I’ve very positive vibes about the week ahead.
“It’s always fantastic to go back to a golf course where you have won before. Those memories keep coming back to you and you feel really positive and you’re upbeat about playing that week,” said Singh.
Singh will have to fend off the challenges of world number one Jordan Spieth of the United States as well as a host of promising young talents that includes world number 26 Byeonghun An of Korea and Asian Tour winners Danthai Boonma of Thailand and Philippines’ Miguel Tabuena at the 50th staging of Singapore’s iconic National Open.

While the 44-year-old is happy with his underdog tag, he is confident he can still surmount a strong challenge against his younger rivals.
“You become an underdog after you reach 40,” laughed Singh. “I come into the week, telling myself it’s a new week and you just have to try to follow your routine and process and you take whatever comes your way.
“If you put pressure on winning, it’ll be very tough. You just have go out there and try to do your best and that win will come to you.”
Meanwhile home favourite Mardan Mamat is relishing the return of the SMBC Singapore Open as it will give him another opportunity to play on home soil and underline his status as the country’s number one golfer.
“It’s nice to have our National Open back on our schedule after three years. My preparations have been very good and I just had my practice rounds where the game’s shaping up really well.
“I’m sure there’ll be lots of expectations from the home crowd but I’m old enough to know how to handle these kind of pressure,” said Mardan, a five time Asian Tour winner.
The SMBC Singapore Open will feature the top 60 players from the Asian Tour, top 60 from the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO), leading Singapore professionals and amateurs and invites including players from the top 50 in the world.
Ends.

SGA is a member of the International Golf Federation, Asia Pacific Golf Confederation and ASEAN Golf Federation.  As the governing body of golf, it is also an Affiliate Member of the Singapore Sports Council and the Singapore National Olympic Council.
