Sentosa, Singapore, January 31: Korea’s Younghan Song remained in control at the SMBC Singapore Open after he completed his weather-delayed third round with a two-under-par 69 on Sunday.
World number Jordan Spieth of the United States also returned early Sunday morning to finish his remaining two holes with a bogey-birdie, leaving him five shots behind Song heading into the final round at the Serapong Course, Sentosa Golf Club.
Song, who had five holes to play, returned at 7.30am and immediately made an impact with another birdie on 14 but he returned that shot quickly on the next hole.
Two birdies in his last three holes however surged the Korean back to the leaderboard at the US$1 million event that is sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO).SINGAPORE_310116_JORDAN_SPIETH_002
“It was nice to finish off the round with two birdies in last three holes. It has been a very long week but that’s okay. I’m still in the lead and I hope to get the job done later.
"It has been a good test all week not only on the golf course but also mentally as you really have to stay focused and keep the energy levels up,” said Song, who compiled a three-day total of 11-under-par 202.
Meanwhile Spieth will be heading back to the starting tee with renewed confidence after enduring a long and testing week at the Lion City.
“Today is a new day. It was very frustrating Friday and Saturday rounds as I was just not making right decisions. I am just rushing myself, trying to do too much.
“So we’re going to play the last round differently and take a lot of confidence off the finish today,” said Spieth.
China’s Liang Wen-chong had earlier broke through the fatigue barrier by carding a 67 to snatch the third round clubhouse lead before play was suspended due to darkness on Saturday.
The Chinese played a marathon 31 holes as inclement weather during the first two rounds had led to lengthy delays at the Singapore showpiece.
“I played 31 holes today and to be honest, I was feeling tired towards the end of the round. I’m happy I managed to birdie 16 and 18 coming in as those birdies gave me that much-needed confidence boost for tomorrow,” said Liang.SMBCSO_30116_Ling_wen_chong_06

SGA is a member of the International Golf Federation, Asia Pacific Golf Confederation and ASEAN Golf Federation.  As the governing body of golf, it is also an Affiliate Member of the Singapore Sports Council and the Singapore National Olympic Council.
