Stars to watch in 2017: Miguel Tabuena

Sentosa, Singapore, January 6:

The search for a second Asian Tour title will continue for Miguel Tabuena in 2017. However, it seems only a matter of time before the rising Filipino star goes on to increase his victory haul and fill up his trophy mantle at his home in Manila. Last year, the power-packed Tabuena secured five top-10 finishes, including a tied-second outing in the Maybank Championship Malaysia and a runner-up result in the Mercuries Taiwan Masters to cap his best season yet on the Asian Tour.

His pocketed US$565,962 throughout the year which saw him finish a career-high fifth on the final Order of Merit. The only thing missing from his glorious year was a victory which many expect him to come through in a big way in 2017.

Having claimed his Asian Tour breakthrough win in December, 2015 when he won his National Open, Tabuena picked up from where he left off in 2016 with a strong start to the new season by finishing tied fourth and second at the SMBC Singapore Open and Maybank Championship Malaysia respectively.

He then sweetened his season with a Major debut at the U.S. Open in June after topping the sectional qualifying in California. The young star also represented his country at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne. Currently ranked 144th in the Official World Golf Ranking, Tabuena is the highest ranked Filipino in the world and at the age of 22, the sky is the limit for him.

The former amateur star is scheduled to tee up in the Asian Tour’s 2017 season-opener at the SMBC Singapore Open in two weeks’ time.
