Chonburi, December 12: This week’s Thailand Golf Championship will offer the winner a whopping 38 Official World Golf Ranking points, one of the highest ever in a full field Asian Tour tournament.
With two of the world’s top-five players – Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose – in the field and six others in the top-50 featuring at Amata Spring Country Club alongside the Asian Tour’s leading stars who include five Order of Merit champions and 48 winners, the Thailand Golf Championship has received a tournament weight rating of 200.
This week’s other tournament in South Africa, the Nelson Mandela Invitational, has a weight rating of 21.
With the high number of world ranking points on offer, Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who currently has one hand on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit, will need to finish in the top-three at the Thailand Golf Championship to have a chance of breaking into the world’s top-50.
He is currently 61st in the world following a season to remember where he has won once and finished top-five on five other occasions.
