The 42-year-old took advantage of ideal conditions in the morning to mark his card with five birdies against a lone bogey at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club.
Local star Miguel Tabuena signed for a 70 after overcoming a stomach bug while Angelo Que fought to a 71 in a round that included one double bogey, three bogeys and six birdies in what is the richest golf tournament in the Philippines.
“I played in the morning so it wasn’t too windy. The wind will surely pick up in the afternoon so we will see how it goes tomorrow. I just want to play the same like how I did today. I don’t want to think too so much about it yet. There is still a lot of golf to play,” said Sumcad.

“My tee shots were good and I putted very well. I think putting is the key to play well here. You know the other golfers are probably driving the ball as good as you, so you really need to have a sharp short game to on the leaderboard,” added Sumcad, who needed 27 putts on the greens.
Young local talent Tabuena, who won the local circuit’s Order of Merit, was pleased with how he held up amid the tough conditions in the afternoon. He signed for a 70 to stay four shots off the pace in tied-27th position.
“I am feeling much better now. It’s tougher in the afternoon, considering the wind. You don’t see a lot of low scores so I think two-under is a pretty solid score. Hopefully I can take advantage of the less windy (hopefully) morning conditions tomorrow,” Tabuena said.
“My driving off the tee was solid. I think I only missed one fairway. I took advantage of the par-five 15 hole for birdie where I chipped it to about two inches from the hole. You have to putt well and take advantage of the perfect greens,” added the 21-year-old.
Local duo Rufino Bayron and Clyde Mondilla registered matching 69s while another home favourite Antonio Lascuna carded a 70.
