Chang Hwa, Chinese Taipei, June 5: The Taifong Open will make its debut as the Asian Development Tour’s (ADT) richest tournament in July.
The US$160,000 event, which previously staged five editions on the domestic Chinese Taipei circuit, will be held at the highly-rated Taifong Golf Club in Chang Hwa city from July 24 to 27, 2014.
The tournament has not been staged since 2010 as the venue underwent major upgrading works but the club has committed to host the Taifong Open on the ADT until 2016 with the intention to provide additional playing opportunities for Chinese Taipei players.
Taifong Golf Club Chairman, Lin Por-shih, said: “We are delighted to announce the return of the Taifong Open. We are very honoured to be involved with the Asian Development Tour for the first time and we look forward to welcoming the region’s rising stars to the Taifong Golf Club.
“As the ADT is the gateway to the Asian Tour, we hope our tournament will provide the opportunity for Chinese Taipei players to fast-track their careers. We look forward to a very successful tournament in July.”
Asian Tour Chairman Kyi Hla Han was thrilled to welcome the Taifong Open as the newest tournament on the ADT Schedule.
“On behalf of our talented players, we are privileged to welcome the Taifong Open on the ADT Schedule. As the richest tournament now on the ADT, the event will play a big role in determining the Order of Merit race.
“The ADT continues to create new playing opportunities for players and we hope to unearth many more rising stars of the game through these new and exciting events,” said Han.
The past editions of the Taifong Open were won by established Chinese Taipei players Yeh Wei-tze, Chan Yih-shin, Lu Wei-chih, Lu Chien-soon and current ADT Order of Merit leader Chan Shih-chang.
Shih-chang, who claimed his maiden professional win in the 2010 Taifong Open, is looking forward to finally defend his title after a four-year gap.
“I am very happy to see that the Taifong Open is coming back onto the schedule! I will have the opportunity to defend the title after such a long wait. It’s good to see the tournament coming on board the ADT especially, now that I’m leading the Order of Merit,” said Shih-chang, who claimed his third ADT victory in Malaysia two weeks ago.
A temporary clubhouse will be ready in June while the new Siza clubhouse is expected to be complete by 2016.
Chinese Taipei golfers have established themselves on the ADT over the past few years with the likes of Chan, Hung Chien-yao, Hsieh Chih-hsien, Hsu Mong-nan and Lin Wen-tang winning on the ADT.
All ADT events continue to receive Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points for the second consecutive year. Through the world ranking status, players will have a chance to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The ADT will also enter an exciting development this season where the top five players at the end of the season will gain playing rights for the 2015 Asian Tour season. Previously, the top-three players were offered Asian Tour cards since the ADT’s launch in 2010.
The ADT was launched with five tournaments before growing to eight in 2011, 13 in 2012 and a record 16 in the 2013 season.
