TGC Rd 1 What they said

Thanyakon Khrongpha (Tha) – First Round 69 (-3)

I was a little bit nervous because I started in difficult conditions. I’m in a good form and I’ve been playing well for some time now. I’m happy with my result. I have to stick to my game plan because the rough is very long and the wind is very strong.

I hit good drives and putted very well. I must continue to do that. I wasn’t worried about my score because the conditions were tough. I like the greens here. I know where the slopes are and I don’t find it tough to putt on these greens.

Last week was the first time I played with a Major winner so if I can play with another star player this week it will be another good experience.

Marcus Fraser (Aus) – First Round 69 (-3)

It's pretty tough out there, that rough is pretty penal. Luckily I don't think I hit it in there all day which was nice so hopefully that continues for the week.

I've been out injured all year. Started back in Hong Kong. Just trying to get back in the swing of things really. [Fraser was out with a wrist injury]

On a sponsors invite this week, so it was nice of them to do that. I enjoyed my time here last year. It's a great golf course and a great tournament.

[On his chip-in birdie at the 18th, his final hole]It was nice. I hit a pretty ordinary drive, got lucky, it bounced across cart path and I got a decent lie. Hit it short of the green, next thing I chipped in, so nice way to finish.

[On the Open Qualifying Series] The Australian PGA is on in Australia at the moment, so that was the decision behind coming up here, to try and get my spot [at The Open]. That was the thinking behind not staying at home and coming up here. In an ideal world it would be nice  to get one of the spots, so hopefully keep playing well and give myself a chance at the end of the week.

Richard T. Lee (Can) – First Round 69 (-3)

I just finished Japan Qualifying School. I had one bad round in Japan and that kind of put me out of the tournament. I made one bogey today and it was a dumb bogey. I hit a driver to the fairway and hit my second shot to the rough. Made bogey there (hole two). Other than that, all my shots were executed pretty well. I’m going to do the same thing and hopefully make more putts.

Lee Westwood (Eng) – First Round 70 (-2)

Well I think the golf course is playing a lot tougher. Rough is very thick this year. Hit it in there it's almost a dropped shot immediately. There was a bit of breeze as well, tricky flag positions, greens quite firm – it was a tough test. It's important to hit the fairways.

[On holing some good putts for par] Those are the ones that keep the momentum of the round going. Missed a couple of fairways but managed to make some good pars. Other than that played really solidly. Had a couple of bad breaks late on in the round. But other than that played pretty solidly and I'll accept 70.

[On jetlag] Only quarter past three this morning. But managed to get back to sleep. No, I felt fresh today, been working out in the gym, so I am in pretty good shape and that helps when it's as hot as this.

Scott Hend (Aus) – First Round 70 (-2)

It was a tough day because the conditions are very tough. I just grind it out for a good score and I’m in a good position. I’m trying out a new driver so right now I’m not really sure where my drives are going. The rough is pretty brutal if you miss the fairways. The wind is obviously blowing quite hard. The greens are pretty firm and in good shape. If you get yourself out of position, you can’t really get any spin on the ball.

Anirban Lahiri (Ind) – First Round 71 (-1)

It was really tough out there. I played pretty solid I think, just the middle of my round, a few holes, I let it go a little. I am satisfied, not the best of starts but I am still there. It's not easy to score out there. Like I said, not much margin for error.

I was out really early at 7 am and it wasn't too bad. The first two or three holes were not too bad. But it got really windy today, pins not exactly in easy positions. If you're not on the fairway you'll be lucky to get away with a par. It's hard work.

Yeah you just got to keep playing. Keep finding the fairways. Keep giving yourself opportunities. I did well with that. Should have made a few more putts, but that's okay. I'm happy.

Sergio Garcia (Esp) – First Round 71 (-1)

There was a lot of wind here and the course is firm. Every year we had rain just before the tournament and it kept the greens much softer. It was difficult to get on the greens.

Juan Carlos Ferrero did good today! He kept confident and calm throughout the whole day. It was nice.

At the start of the day my plan was to hit as many good shots as possible with minimal mistakes. It is quite simple really. Like I said, with this windy condition the course is playing a lot tougher.

Martin Kaymer (Ger) – First Round 71 (-1)

To be honest when I played the first nine holes, I didn’t see a 22-under-par (referring to previous winning results). It was a tough day in the office.

It was very windy and it was a difficult day. Some pins were tucked behind of bunkers so overall it was a very difficult day and anything around par is a good score here.

It took me a while to get used to the greens and as the round progresses, the greens will get a little bit more firmer which will make it tougher. This is my first tournament here and I need to make a few adjustments to my tee shots because I don’t know much about the yardages yet. But I won’t make any major change.

David Lipsky (Usa) – First Round 71 (-1)

I didn’t hit it great today but I scrambled well and holed my putts when I needed to. It is very tough out there. The rough is very thick and you need to come into the greens with proper trajectory. It was windy so all in all I’m happy.

Thongchai Jaidee (Tha) – First Round 72 (E)

I played fantastic on the front nine. I know the course is set-up very tough. You can see the score. The scores are definitely different from last year and it is also because of the strong wind.

I’m happy with how I played. I played well but on a few holes, I missed the spot where I was aiming for. I had a good and fun group. I really look forward to the next few days. If I can play like how I did then I think I can give myself a chance during the weekend.

Prom Meesawat (Tha) – First Round 72 (E)

I’m very happy with my score considering my health and the tough conditions here. It is very tough to play in the wind. If you miss the fairways by a couple of yards, then you still have a chance to approach the green. But if you miss way left or right, then you have to lay up.

My back is getting better and better. I have to thank the Asian Tour physiotherapist for treating my back. I saw who I was paired with on Tuesday and I really wanted to play! I tried everything to get on the course.

I did well today but made a couple of mistakes. This is the first time I’m playing with Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer. I certainly learnt a few things and show them a few things as well!

Bubba Watson of the USA Bubba Watson of the USA

Kaymer got into trouble on the 14th hole and he fought back to one-under which was great! I asked him about the course conditions and he said it was amazing except for the long rough.

For me, I need to get more distance. They have a big advantage on the par fives because of their distance off the tees. If I can get 10 yards more than I think I can do better. They do very well in windy conditions because their ball speed is faster.

It was good fun today and I look forward to tomorrow.

Bubba Watson (Usa) – First Round 76 (+4)

Not good. It was a rough day. I couldn’t make any putts and that killed the momentum. You will make a couple of bogeys out here because the rough is so thick. Hopefully tomorrow I can make some putts and eliminate the bad swings. I couldn’t read some greens. I didn’t get the speeds right. I was about a foot short all day. If I hit my putts a harder I would have holed a lot more putts. I need to get my tee shots on the fairways, hit more greens and hole one or two putts. I don’t have to make all of them. I just need to hole some of it to get the momentum going.
