November 15: Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Thongchai Jaidee put Asian golf at the forefront of the world map when they opened their campaigns impressively after the first round of the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on Thursday.
Current Asian Tour Order of Merit leader, Kiradech fired a five-under-par 67 to stay one shot behind Spaniard leader, Alejandro Cañizares in tied-second place with Australia's Marcus Fraser at the Jumeirah Golf Estates.
Thongchai, a three-time Order of Merit winner on the Asian Tour, posted a 69 to take a share of seventh place with England’s Ian Poulter and Thorbjørn Olesen of Denmark in the final event on the European Tour this season.
“I’m quite happy with my 67 today. I hit the ball really well and made a lot of putts. It’s my first time playing at this course and I must say it really suits long-hitters like me. You have to hit a lot of greens to score well here. If you can get the right positions, it’s not that tough,” said Kiradech.
“Coming from an Asian country, I must say I’m used to playing in the heat. The hot weather here didn’t really affect me. I have been very confident with my game since winning the Malaysian Open earlier this year. I hope to finish well on the European Tour before returning to Asia,” added Kiradech.
