September 4: Talented Thai duo Panuphol Pittayarat and Thitiphun Chuayprakong opened with matching four-under-par 67s to stay two shots off the pace at the M2M Russian Open on Thursday.
Panuphol returned with a bogey-free card highlighted by four birdies and Thitiphun traded six birdies against two bogeys to tie in fifth position alongside six other players, including South African Keith Horne, who came through the Asian Tour Qualifying School earlier this year.
Indian duo Rahil Gangjee and Jyoti Randhawa, Thailand’s Prom Meesawat, Kalle Samooja of Finland and England’s Simon Griffiths were among those bunched in 13th place following identical 68s at the Skolkovo Golf Club in Moscow.
Thai veteran Thaworn Wiratchant and compatriot Pariya Junhasavasdikul, as well as Javi Colomo of Spain, stayed a further shot back in 29th place while Singapore’s Mardan Mamat signed for a 70 to sit in tied-48th position with nine other players including Q-School graduate Niclas Johansson of Sweden.
The opening round of the M2M Russian Open was led by Scott Jamieson of Scotland and Daniel Gaunt of Australia.
