What’s your take on the 64 with nine birdies?
It’s always nice when that happens. You always shoot pretty good number when you do that. I’m pleased, I  putted well and putter is still hot which is nice. Hit some good wedges, some good iron shots. It was good.
It was right from the word go too?
That’s funny. I birdied the first two holes and then duck-hooked into the water on the next. Sam my caddie said “man, you look so depressed.” I don’t know why I was bung this morning. I guess with the way I’ve been hitting, I was just annoyed and frustrated. After that, I just kind of free-wheeled it and have some fun.
The next hole was nice, hit a nice wedge close and then I started stringing together some good ones. I hit it really good on the front nine which is really nice.
Perth was your kind of course, how about this one here?
I’d say this is more my kind of course, it’s longer and wider. Perth I just loved that place. This one sets up for longer hitters which is more my style as opposed to what I’ve heard about next week (Delhi Golf Club). It’s always nice to get off to a good start.
How’s the heat for you?
I rather play in this than with a jumper. I’d rather sweating. This is Florida in the summer for me. It’s fantastic.
Last week I had a nice vacation, didn’t touch a club which was nice. I just rocked up here. You come up here with a clean slate and a fresh start. I hit it so bad on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, so I was kind of bummed. So it’s nice to do this today. Once the tournament got going, I just relaxed. It’s nice staying back rather than going home after Australia.
What did you do in your holiday?
I went to Phuket and had a week there and hung out with Nicholas Colsaerts.

What do you make of that?
I played really well. Hit some great tee shots, long and straight and it gave me a few birdie chances out there.
You were eight under through 10?
I might have been, or 11. The fairways are firm enough and if you hit the fairways, there’s a few wedges out there.
Are you freewheeling and not registering it?
It’s hard not to. I played so good, I wasn’t looking at the numbers too much. It was a stress free day.
Did 59 come to mind?
It didn’t actually. Maybe I should have thought about that! If it happened, it happened. But no.
Does a few indifferent shots coming in change the mood for you?
It does. I hit a great drive on seven, but it’s so tight that tee shot. It’s either hitting a three wood and taking the water on the right into play if I miss it there and a driver I would clear all the trouble. Hit a great drive and maybe a too aggressive shot.
You’re proudly wearing the Black Mountain shirt. How familiar are you with the place?
Very much. I’ve been playing here a lot. I know the course better than my home course in Sweden which says a lot. I know my way around here.
Does it help?
It does, especially on a course like this. It’s generous off the tee and you know you can’t have too many downhill putts, especially during the weekend.
Do you like this part of the world?
I spend like two to three months here during winter for the last four years. I’m enjoying myself.

What do you make of 67 to start?
It’s a good start, I’ve not had the number in a while. I always have a good feeling about this golf course and when we play here. I always play well when we’re here and I came into the tournament with that mentality and I have to thank the All Thailand Tour and Thongchai Jaidee for having his tournament here as well. So that helps a lot. Somehow, this course suits my eye and I get a good number.
What do you like about this?
I guess I see a lot of room out there instead of the hazards. I know where to place the ball and where to put it and give myself enough opportunities. Yeah, I didn’t take the opportunities on the par five, only converted one and didn’t convert on the short 17. But give and take, I made some on the difficult holes as well. That’s just golf.
I think so, it’s down to the fact I love Black Mountain. I don’t feel like I’m swinging it that well but when I got here it was just like business as usual. I’m trying to place the ball to the spot where I need to and it’s worked out. I’ll try to keep it up and get that confidence out to different tournaments.
I speak to a lot of guys and they all love it. The food is great and the town is great and the golf course is in great condition.

It’s a good round, I hit it well and my putting was also good. Playing good today. I think it was windier in the afternoon, and it was tougher than the morning session which didn’t have too much winds. That’s the difference. I’m hitting it really good and made a few putts.
I don’t think it’s a long hitters’ course. It’s long but a few holes are also short. It’s got a good match of holes. Anyone can play well here. I’ve played here every year and I always play well. I don’t finish on low numbers but I am normally good around here. I like this course.
I’m going to keep to my routine for the next three days. I’ve started well and I’ll keep those positive thoughts in my mind. I made a good birdie on two, holed a tough putt from left to right from 10 feet.
I’m feeling comfortable. Everything feels positive. Now that I’ve shot an under par start, I’m going to try to build on in and keep staying positive.

You must be pleased?
Four under par today, even though I bogeyed the last hole, it’s still good. I was two over par through eight holes. Just started to get it going. Birdied 18 and holed a tough putt on one and chipped in on two for eagle and hit it close on four, five and six. After starting like that and finishing like that, I’m happy.
The chip in must have been the boost?
The eagle changed everything and even the putt on one. If I had not done that, I would not have birdied four, five or six. That got the momentum going. It helped me to keep going as well. I felt heavy starting the day. I just kept going, and kept grinding and felt normal.
Why do you reckon?
Maybe it was the heat. It feels a bit hotter than usual. Even in practice rounds, I felt so heavy. I think it is the heat affecting all of us. I drank a lot of water, my caddie kept giving me water on every hole.
Is this the sort of course you enjoy playing on?
I’ve done well here, I know the course pretty well and it’s sort of like a vacation for me. There’re pools everywhere, there’s a beach out there. It’s the laid back part of Thailand and it suits me as I’m laid back. I guess that’s why I’m enjoying it here. We’re working all the time, so what’s a little holiday !
