#ThailandClassic Rd 2: What they said

Hua Hin, Thailand, February 13: Read what leading contenders have to say following their second round at this week's inaugural True Thailand Classic presented by Black Mountain.
Miguel Angel Jimenez (Esp), Six-under-par 66, -11 Total)
Q: Your thoughts on a second round 66?
A: I’m very happy. I am disappointed to make bogey on the last but overall I played very solid and made a lot of birdies. You’re always happy when you’re under par – and the more under par you are, the happier you are. I was seven under par with one hole to play, but I finished six under par, but that’s the game.
Q: Did you feel in control and nicely composed out there?
A: I felt nice. My shots to the greens were good.
Q: Is this a course that really suits you?
A: Well the way I’m playing I would say yes. I was hitting shots right at the flags today. You need to be in the right places on the greens. You need to put the ball on the right side of the hole because the putts are very fast. I like it.
Q: Are you feeling as confident as you look?
A: I have the flu and I’m very bunged up and slept terribly last night, but apart from that I’m fine.

You’ve been playing well the last two days. Tell us more
I’ve been striking the ball well. I did not make many mistakes. Got into trouble on 18 during the first round and I missed a short putt on 18 as well today. But apart from that, it has been good.
Feeling good about your game on a course you know well?
I’m happy with the way I’m playing right now as it’s a huge boost to my confidence. I’ve my family and golf fans here this week and I just try to perform well.
Any pressure now that people are beginning to recognise you?
No. Not at all. I still try to keep my focus and concentrate on my golf
How is it like playing alongside Jimenez?
We’ve been playing a lot in Europe last year and he’s a really nice guy. But it’s no easy to beat an old guy like him. He hits the ball very far and is striking it very well. He’s a world-class player in my eyes.

Q How do you feel about your 66 today?
I played very well. But I missed 4-5 short putts. I didn’t putt that well. I need to improve on my putting. But I am very happy with my score today. I’ll try my best to show the local fans the quality of the Thai players especially at an event on home soil.
Q: How were the wind condition this afternoon?
I think it was normal for me. I am used to this kind of condition. I can control the ball in this kind of wind without a problem. Greens are dry because of the wind. So when I putt I’ve to give a little more break for the wind as well.
Q: Do you think the pin position will get tougher?
I think so. Based on the scores that we put up in the past two days. I think the cut should be -3 under par and that is low. I won’t be surprise to see some tough pin positions. There is no rough here so we can still manage to put the ball close to the pin.
Q: What is the difference between yesterday and today rounds?
I still didn’t putt that well on both days but my approach shots were better. I put many shorts close to the pin. That is how I made my birdies today.
Q: Two shots behind the lead, do you think you have a chance?
It’s not that far behind but anything can happen in the next two days. Miguel putted very well today. I did say at the beginning whoever putt well this week can win. We will see.

Q: Thoughts on your round today
A: I’m in a good position at this stage and obviously there are quality players ahead but I’m shaping well for the weekend. I’ll try to hit as many good shots over the weekend and that’s all I should be doing.
Q. Plenty of birdie opportunities out there for you?
Yes there was. I made couple of mistakes out but made up for those with the birdies. Hopefully, I can cut the mistakes out on the weekend and have a chance.
Q. You like this course?
Yes, it allows you to be aggressive and it pays off if you’re aggressive and positive and hit good shots. You can rewarded. If you’re doubtful of your abilities, it can grab you pretty quick.

Your thoughts on that 67 to move you up there again.
I’m very happy with the way I played today. Just one bogey is good especially on a course like this. The greens are really tricky.
The winds can pose a big challenge too?
Luckily we teed off in the morning today and the conditions were easier.
Nice to carry on that form from Malaysia
Definitely. These few weeks are pretty important for me. I came off a win last year and I’ve been in good form. I’m pretty surprised with the results.  When you’re in contention, you just want to make birdies out there and play as consistently as you can.
