#ThailandClassic Rd 3: What they said

Scott Hend (Aus) – Third round 70 (-2), Total 202 (-14)
Thoughts on the day?
It was a good grind. Out of 10, I felt like 2 out of 10, felt really tired, no energy. I knew it was going to be a tough day, very windy so I’m very pleased.
How difficult was it?
The winds were a bit tricky, but I had low energy. Getting old, it just catches up sooner or later. You always have a bad body week, and struggle mentally when you travel. If you deal with it well, you get away with it.

What do you need to do?
You have to make sure you keep you fluids up and keep your electrolytes up at night and make sure you have enough fluid in your body before you get out there. There’s no point trying to pour it in when you’re out there. You’ve got to get your preparation right before you go out.
You were at the wrong end last week in the US and now leading here. Is this something new for you?
This is golf, it mirrors what life is like. You have your ups and downs. I’m the sort of guy who goes up and down emotionally and my golf is a direct reflection of me as a person. So that’s the way it is.
You take it as it comes?
You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. That’s the way it goes. I’m happy with my life, I’m happy with what I do and I’m to be in this position right now.
Will the adrenaline kick in tomorrow?
I guess for some people. It’s just another round of golf for me tomorrow. It’s a long season. We practice for a result, we practice to try and get a win, we try to get ourselves in this position to have a win. If you’re not in this position, you get upset with yourself. When you’re actually here, you’ve got to try to enjoy it and embrace it. It’s not very often you get a chance to lead a tournament on a Saturday night, let alone on a Sunday.

Pleased with that effort?
“Yes. I know Thomas shot six under but apart from that there are not a lot of guys going low so it was a good day. It was tough out there but fun and I was pleased with how the day went and how I handled it mentally. I holed some nice putts out there.”
Happy with the position?
“At the start of every week you are trying to be in there with a chance to win on Sunday, so I am definitely pleased and we will see it goes tomorrow. I feel like each time I am in this potion that I get more comfortable and ore confident and able to play better. I’ll tell you what, you would rather be in that position all the time instead of not having it all year and then all of a sudden popping up there and being in the final group one week. So I would like to be in this position as much as I can and see where I go from there.”
Idea for a winning score?
“Depends on the weather really. I think it is to be quite windy again tomorrow but there is still a score out there as Thomas proved today, even though the pins are tricky. It will be about who holes the most putts tomorrow I think.
Feeling better?
“Yeah, I feel better today. You expend more energy getting upset so I didn’t get too upset with myself today and I feel a lot better.”

Birdie on the last was important?
Yeah, I hit the ball so well today and didn’t get anything going. A bit disappointed with the round but happy to birdie the last.
Seems like you were a bit disappointed at the end?
Oh yeah, I only missed one or two greens today and hit almost every fairway. Hit the ball so well. Just didn’t hole the putts, didn’t happen. Hopefully they’ll drop tomorrow.
How difficult was it with the wind?
It was a lot windier today and it was coming from different directions. The pins today were hard to get close. You can see it in the scores which was tougher today.
So tricky to read the winds?
Some of the holes, you’re dealing with 15 to 20mph winds and some of the holes are going up the hill, you have to get the distances right.
Positive about Sunday?
Definitely, top five right now, a few behind Hendy. A good round tomorrow and we’ll see what happens.

Your verdict?
It was very tricky out there. The wind was all over the place and at times, it was very strong. You had to show a lot of patience and you had to see if you could hold a couple of putts out there.
Early eagle?
One of my mates asked me so nicely to eagle that hole and it was nice to knock that putt in. I thought I needed to get the putt rolling a bit but like I said it was tricky. You couldn’t attack the course too much.
This mate from the States, he said he couldn’t sleep and he was watching the highlights and the next thing I popped up and he couldn’t believe it. He started sending me messages early this morning. He caddied for me when I was playing in the mini tours in the States, he said it was a nice looking hole, why not make a three!
There are a couple of holes where you can take advantage of but unfortunately I couldn’t take full advantage. On 10, I hit a great drive down there but failed to get up and down. You have to be patient, you have to give your respect to the course, otherwise it will bite you.
Happy with your position?
Yeah, I’m up right there, I’ve got a chance. I’m a couple of shots behind. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.
Thomas Pieters (Bel), Third round 66 (-6), Total 205 (-11)
Thoughts on back to back 66s?
I haven’t done much the last two days. Made my par putts and rolled in a couple short birdies putts. Haven’t really made any long putts. So overall, I’m quite happy.
What’s the story of the week when you shoot two bogeys over three opening holes on Thursday?
I got here late on Tuesday night. I was very sick last week, still on antibiotics. That didn’t help in this heat. Feeling better day by day, should be fine tomorrow. A bit of sinus infection and some fever. You have to drink loads and eat loads. I remember the first day Gary Staal passed out or something on the course. It shows that if you don’t drink enough, you can get dizzy and it’s not good.
Disappointed that a few didn’t drop at the end?
It was a poor finish. I had a hard time chipping out from this grass, it’s different from back home. I feel like pretty bad. Hopefully it’ll be better.
Happy with position on the leaderboard?
That’s what you want. I will probably be four or five within the lead. There are plenty of birdies out there in the afternoon. I just want to give myself a chance tomorrow.
Is the world ranking providing you the motivation this week as it’s the last week to qualify for the WGC Dell Match Play?
No, you know, it’ll be what it’s going to be. I’m not going to stress about it or put any extra pressure on me. If I play well hopefully I’ll have a chance tomorrow.
What has worked this week?
My driver, the last half year, my driver hasn’t been as accurate as I want it to be but this week, it’s been like automatic pilot. I’ve been finding fairways and it’s going long which helps.
Especially on this course?
Yeah for sure, you can leave yourself some wedges in where as some others will have an eight iron. You cut off the corners, like 10 I hit it onto the green today. That’s not all the guys can do. It’s an easy birdie there.
Prom Meesawat (Tha) – Third Round 69 (-3), Total 207 (-9)
Thoughts on third round?
Today, the wind was quite strong, especially on the back nine where the pins were difficult, three on the right, three on the left. Have to be very patient. My round was very good although I still missed putts on 16 and 17. It was good to play with Thongchai.
Nice to birdie the last?
Still in contention but I’m going to play my game. That’s the key to play on this course. Like I said on Thursday, I know the course here very well, just try to do my best.
You were up there on day one, but quieter yesterday?
I had a couple of three putts on the par threes. After three rounds, I’m still in with a chance. Just go out there and enjoy.
Did you enjoy playing with Thongchai?
It was nice to play with Thai players. It’s one of my dreams to play with my Thai hero. Thongchai, since I was young, I was watching players like him. It’s another dream come true.
