Thaworn sweats over missing golf set

Muirfield, July 16: Reigning Asian Tour number one Thaworn Wiratchant is waiting anxiously for the arrival of his golf equipment as he prepares for his second Open Championship challenge which starts on Thursday.
His golf set did not arrive from London and the Thai star was clearly disappointed to miss a practice round at Muirfield with countrymen Kiradech Aphibarnrat, the current  Order of Merit leader and Thongchai Jaidee, a three-time Asian Tour number one on Tuesday.
“It is disappointing because I won’t know how the course is playing yet. I’ll just have to wait for my clubs. If it doesn’t arrive then I’ll have to make a set here,” lamented Thaworn, who is grouped with Lucas Glover of the United States and Oscar Floren of Sweden in the opening two rounds.
To make up for his free time, the 46-year-old will work on his putting after receiving a new putter from Callaway Golf. He will also take time to walk around the golf course to get accustomed with the conditions at Muirfield.
“I’ll just walk with Kiradech and Thongchai and have a look at the golf course. I’ve been waiting for my clubs since Monday and it has been disappointing. But I’ll need to remain patient and hopefully it arrives on time,” he said.
Thaworn knows it will be a challenging task to improve on his credible tied 31st result at Royal Liverpool in 2006 if his golf set, which includes a new set of irons, do not arrive on time.
“It is going to be tough. My own game isn’t good and I’ve been missing a lot of cuts. My short game is okay but my irons and driving are not good. I decided to change to a new set of irons for this week so I hope it arrives by today.”
“The weather has been good these few days but it might change. If it stays this way (sunny and breezy), then I think we (Thais) will be more comfortable playing here,” added Thaworn, who qualified for the year’s third Major after winning the 2012 Order of Merit.
Ends.
