Singapore, May 1: Read what players have to say after the first round of The Championship at Laguna National on Thursday.
PANUPHOL PITTAYARAT (THA) – FIRST ROUND 63 (-9)
It was a good day out there. The weather is good and I hole a lot of putts. I gave myself a lot of chances to score. I am very happy with how I played today. I didn’t see it coming but it did come. I’m feeling good about my game right now. I was just trying to hit straight out there. I managed to hole a lot of putts and a lot of them were unexpected.
I spent a year in Australia so that’s probably the reason why I speak fluent english. I learned the language back in school in Thailand. I watch a lot of series as well. ‘Coconut’ is a nickname given by my parents. I got a brother nicknamed ‘Tamarind’ and a sister nicknamed ‘Lemon’. It’s common to have nicknames back home in Thailand. My parents gave us special nicknames because they don’t want us to have the same ones as other people.
DAVID LIPSKY (USA) – FIRST ROUND 64 (-8)
My game has been feeling pretty good. I just put together today. In Malaysia, I putted well but didn’t hit it great. Last week in Indonesia, I hit the ball well but didn’t putt great. This week I seem to have put everything together.
This course demands that you hit your irons well and the greens are perfect right now. As long as you putt well, you will have chances to score.
I played with Panuphol Pittarayat today and it was good fun even though he beat me by one. I think we just fed off each other. Honestly, we were just trying to beat each other and that was all we were thinking about.
The course is not very long and it’s in soft conditions. The greens are looking good and I think it is important to make birdies this week. I will have to make more birdies in the next three rounds if I want to stay where I am at right now.
Playing in co-sanctioned events gave us opportunities to step up our game and move on to the European Tour and play with the best players in the world. I love these playing opportunities.
SCOTT JAMIESON (SCO) – FIRST ROUND 64 (-8)
I’ve been hitting the ball well the last couple of weeks so it was nice to get a round where it all came together. There was just the one mistake with the three putt on 16 but it was pretty far away and pace putting is always difficult in Asia with the grain. It’s not what someone from Scotland is used to. But it was a great start.
It wasn’t too hot today. It’s still a bit warmer than I would like but playing in the morning, it is a bit cooler. You’ll always have the humidity but you come here expecting it. It’s always a possibility that you might not complete 72 holes so a fast start is important. So I’m grateful for that today.
There’s not much wind out there and apparently there has been a drought here so there is not much rough either. You can still control the ball when you don’t hit the fairway, so I think everyone will have a lot of looks at birdies. The greens is rolling perfectly too.
It was good to finish with a great approach into 18 and holing the birdie putt. I had a lot of looks at birdies today and that was probably one of the longer ones. So it was nice to see that one fall after missing a couple of shorter ones and eight under is obviously a fantastic start.
I’ve been hitting the ball really well since we came out to Asia but today was the first time I really capitalised on that. Golfers strive for perfection so it is always going to feel like you left something out there, but I holed some nice putts so I’m pleased. It’s nice to play 18 holes in a row. I’m sure we won’t get to play 72 in a row. It can always be a shortened event so it’s important to get off to a fast start and that was a good one for me.
QUINCY QUEK (SIN) – FIRST ROUND 64 (-8)
I could not have started any better. The weather has been very kind to us especially after the rain delay this morning. The course is perfect and the greens are rolling so well. That’s where I picked up most of my birdies on the putting greens. I holed quite a few long putts. I was just looking at my statistics today. I had 20 putts which I have never get before. It is quite a crazy one for me but we still have three more days to go. I am looking forward to playing well again tomorrow. The putter was working well for me. I gave myself chances by hitting the ball closer than I normally do. Overall it’s been a pretty good day. I had fun out there. I was really staying positive all the way and just to play one hole at a time.
It’s always nice to play in your home country with your friends and family coming out to support you which I don’t really get when I am overseas. It’s a bonus to be able to play well in front of them. At least I made their six hours out there worth it.
Playing well in the first round has definitely put me in a good position going forward. There are still three more rounds to go. I just have to go out there and make as many birdies as I can again.
MITHUN PERERA (SRI) – FIRST ROUND 65 (-7)
I think this course really suits my game. I played well today but I think I could have done better. I missed a lot of birdies putts but overall I am still happy with my game. I struggled with my distance in the last two weeks. I did well today. All my tee shots ended up on the fairways. It’s a narrow and short course. I guess my driving distance matches the layout here. I am happy to get to play on a course like this.
ARNOND VONGVANIJ (THA) – FIRST ROUND 65 (-7)
I got an unlucky break on the eighth unfortunately. I dropped two shots there when it should be an easy par. Overall I’m hitting it good and putting well so I am looking forward to tomorrow. I will just try and do what I did today and hopefully get a better result tomorrow. It can be anyone’s game this week. It will all come down to how you putt this week. I will try and give myself chances.
KRISTOFFER BROBERG (SWE) – FIRST ROUND 65 (-7)
I’m very pleased with that. I played really well today and hit a lot of greens and my putting was really good. It was nice not to drop any shots. A good short game is the key out there. It was nice to finish on a birdie. I hit a three wood from the tee and had 80m to the pin and holed a 5m putt. There were a lot of wedges out there and the greens were soft and in good condition. My short game was really good and I’m really pleased.
RADE CABRERA-BELLO (ESP) – FIRST ROUND 66 (-6)
It was nice to finish with two birdies. I played good today with anything being great today, but everything was solid enough. I felt more comfortable on the greens today than the past couple of weeks so I managed to hole some putts and that helped me to shoot a low score.
It’s a good start but it still very early. There is a lot of golf to play and so many things can happen. I’ve done bad before having started great, and I’ve done great having started bad. So you just stay patient, but I’m happy that I have started well.
The putt on the ninth was a nice way to finish, holing a long putt, but the rest was just solid golf and some good putting. Scoring is good today. There is hardly any wind, greens are soft and the ball is rolling really nicely. I think we can get them close as it is not a long course, so you can make some birdies out there.
ANIRBAN LAHIRI (IND) – FIRST ROUND 67 (-5)
I got off to a wayward start. I didn’t hit the ball very good today but it was nice to have my putter come to my rescue for a change. I am happy with how I am striking the ball. I feel more confident with my game this week (after my win in Indonesia last week) as compared to the last few weeks. I feel a lot more comfortable reading the lines. It’s a good start for me. Hopefully I can keep it up for the rest of the week. I think the conditions out there is really favourable today. You can really score if you play well. For me, I guess I was fortunate to have saved a couple of pars which kept my momentum going.
It’s good to have great weather today. I managed to play 18 holes non-stop. This is probably the best weather I’ve got in Singapore as compared to the past.
JEEV MILKHA SINGH (IND) – FIRST ROUND 67 (-5)
It was a great round for me. I haven’t been doing well in the last few weeks but my game is coming around. I’m happy that I shot 67. This is come after a long time. I’m feeling good about my game. I’m working on the right things. I just need to trust my game more.
My shoulder injury is getting better. I’m taking medication after the surgery so it’s working out. I think what is important for me now is to trust my game. I have got to trust it under pressure and put more good numbers out there.
The course is in an excellent conditions. The greens are fantastic. I will just follow my own routine and see what it turns out.
BOONCHU RUANGKIT (THA) – FIRST ROUND 67 (-5)
I managed to hit the fairways for almost every hole. I think I only missed the greens on hole 9 and 10. Everything was good for me out there. I am happy with how I played. The greens are perfect here and it’s in top conditions. My current form is not too bad. I’m getting old already and my fitness is not as good as the younger guys out there so I am happy to play well today.
