Singapore, May 4: Read what players have to say following the final round of The Championship at Laguna National.
FELIPE AGUILAR (CHI) – FINAL ROUND 62 (-10), TOTAL 266 (-22)
Yesterday I thought I had no chance, today I said to my caddie on the 17th after I made a birdie if we can make a birdie on 18 we can out some pressure on the leader and he said ‘what about making a two.’ I said to him the way I had been hitting the ball I could well do. It’s a long story but I made two on 18, and what a beautiful way to finish.
I didn’t make anything on the front nine, I was putting it very close to the hole. Everything was very close but not dropping. I wasn’t reading the breaks very good, but I was putting and striking it very good. I told my caddie on nine if I can get going on back the nine if I could do some damage and it ended up happening.
Hansen is a great player. He has always been there at the top many times. I have been in his situation before – lost in play off, and that is the way golf is. This is the standard of player we have to play against every week. He has got the game and he is great player, he will come back that is for sure, but it was just my chance.
This win definitely makes everything a lot easier for now. It changes the schedule. I didn’t play the first six events on the schedule because of my wrist but now I can do a few arrangements for the rest of the year and get a little bit of rest.
On the 17th green I told my caddie if I make a birdie on 18, I might put some pressure on the leader and he said you might make two. I looked at him and said they way I’m hitting the ball I might make two and I did. It’s very, very special. I didn’t think I had made it until my caddie came back and told me and the other congratulated me. That was the cherry on the cake, definitely. I was right in between clubs. It was the perfect distance for a nine iron with no wind, but we had a little downwind and my caddie said you won’t stop it with that pin on a downwind. So we decided to go a bit right of the pin with a pitching wedge and go right at it. I hit it really well and ended up making it. I got a bit lucky. I hit one of my best shots on 17 and then again on 18.
It’s been a bit of a drought for six years. I’ve lost a couple of times in play-offs and had a couple of top threes and top fives, but never was able to get the round going on the last day, so it is nice to finally do it.
I like playing in the heat more than the cold, and with my wrist injury the heat helps me.
The greens were amazing. I don’t recall the last time I didn’t make a three putt, and the only way you avoid that is if the greens are perfect. I had ten putts on the back nine and what Laguna have done to get the course prepared in this way is fantastic.
I didn’t think I had a chance of winning until the front nine when I was only two under par and they were a little far away, but then making birdie, birdie on the back nine the spirit came back and I thought we might still have a chance. I didn’t think I’d have to make two on 18 though.
DAVID LIPSKY (USA) – FINAL ROUND 65 (-7), TOTAL 267 (-21)
I was still trying to give it a run even on the last hole. I was still trying to do everything I can to win. I played really well this week. I only had four bogeys in four rounds and 23 birdies and 1 eagle in total. I’ll take that any week for sure. The set-up of the course is great this week. The greens are in good shape and running smooth. The heat was tough definitely. That was always an issue.
My game is in good shape now and I’m playing very well. I definitely gained a lot of experience from this week.
ANDERS HANSEN (DEN) – FINAL ROUND 67 (-5), TOTAL 267 (-21)
Aguilar had a good day, played well obviously. I thought I played well. I don’t know what to say.
It’s just really disappointing. To finish 2,2. 17 and the 18 is not that diffcuilt nut to still hole your second shot. I don’t know what to say.
The course is in great condition. If you go out last group and shoot 69 and finish -21 you think you’re in with a chance but you come up short. That’s just life.
I definitely have lots of positive to take into the rest of the season. The last two weeks have been really really good. I’ve hit the ball really well and putted nicely so there is not much to say. I can’t really blame myself for this.
RAHIL GANGJEE (IND) – FINAL ROUND 65 (-7), TOTAL 269 (-19)
The last few holes went by in a hurry. My heart was beating fast on the 17th tee when I hit that six-iron. It ended on the edge of the green and did not move from there. I kept myself in it and it was a bonus that the putt went in. I think this is my best finish so far and my best four round score ever. It’s been a long one month playing under this gruesome weather. I am very happy that I am going home now. My game has been pretty good. I think it’s my physical ability to carry on which has been tested this week. My putting has been very good. I haven’t hit it that well. I hit the ball much better today. My driver was misbehaving yesterday. Overall I am really very happy. It is really difficult to stay focus out there. You get more and more tired towards the end of the round.
RIKARD KARLBERG (SWE) – FINAL ROUND 66 (-6), TOTAL 274 (-14)
It’s been a good week for me. I am very pleased with my weekend again. I didn’t play well for the first two rounds but I managed to make the cut and play well in the last two rounds. I finished third on the Asian Tour Order of Merit in my rookie season. Since then, I have always wanted to finish first. I am currently second on the merit rankings and it is definitely one of my goals to top the Order of Merit this season. I think my current game is at a point where I can actually achieve that. I’m planning to take a few weeks off in Thailand before working on my game again. I will play a few events on the European Tour as well before returning to play Chiangmai Golf Classic.
PROM MEESAWAT (THA) – FINAL ROUND 67 (-5), TOTAL 275 (-13)
I played very solid this week. The greens are tough to read but I’m happy with final round of five-under-par today. It’s an easy course if you can put your ball in good position. You can score if you can gauge a good speed of the greens. I’m very happy with my season so far. I think I am doing good. I played consistently for three weeks in a row. However, there is still a long way to go. I will try and improve on my game. Hopefully a second win on the Asian Tour will come soon so I can contend for the Order of Merit this year. I guess I just have to work harder. I am going to take a couple of weeks off after this week. It is going to be a long break for me. It’s a good break for practice as well. I will have a good rest and prepare myself for the next tournament in Chiangmai.
LAM CHIH BING (SIN) – FINAL ROUND 71 (-1), TOTAL 281 (-7)
I played very well today. I only missed three very short putts as I didn’t read the lines very well.  But overall it was pretty solid. Golf’s a funny game as I was struggling  with my ball striking the first two days but yet I shot such better scores compared to the weekend where I hit the ball more solid. Singapore is always capable of hosting a world-class golf tournament as we got world-class golf courses. Growing up we used to have the Rolex masters, Singapore Open and it’ll be healthy for the sport when we got more tournaments like this here. When I was growing up, I used to go and watch it and that’s what made me want to be a professional golfer. It’s nice to see some kids out here and looking back, they were probably in my position 20, 25 years ago.
ANIRBAN LAHIRI (IND) – FINAL ROUND 66 (-6), TOTAL 271 (-17)
I’m very happy with the way I played this week. I have been playing very well. It’s nice to finish with a solid round. The course was set up for scoring this week so you had to go out there and make the birdies. I didn’t make enough for the first couple of days so it was difficult to catch up. I play the same brand of golf all the time. I wasn’t especially aggressive today. I like to play aggressively and I like to go for my shots. I hit some better golf today as compared to earlier in the week.
I have been playing well and it was nice to win last win. This week was obviously an important week for me so I am glad I played solid all week. Everything seems to be working out for me. My putter was cold last week but it came to my rescue this week. It’s been good overall so I am very happy with my game right now.
