February 17: Three-time Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand will face off with Webb Simpson of the United States when the WGC-Accenture Match Play tees off on Wednesday.
Thongchai, who will captain Team Asia at the inaugural EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM in Malaysia next month, will lock horns with the 2012 US Open champion in his opening match.
Currently ranked 51st in the world, the Thai is expected to shine at this week’s US$9million tournament, having enjoyed solid performances in previous editions.
The 13-time Asian Tour winner battled his way into the quarter-finals in 2010 before losing in a closely fought match to eventual champion Ian Poulter.
He also finished runner-up at the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Bulgaria last year, losing in the final to Europe’s Ryder Cup hero Graeme McDowell, who will feature in Team Europe at the EurAsia Cup
All eyes will also be on 2013 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand who will take on Europe’s number one Henrik Stenson of Sweden.
The Swede capped an astonishing season in 2013 by winning the Race to Dubai and FedEx Cup on the European Tour and PGA Tour respectively.
However, Stenson can expect to face a stiff opening challenge from Kiradech who also had his moment of glory in 2013 when he won the Maybank Malaysian Open and eclipsed some of the PGA Tour biggest stars at the CIMB Classic by finishing third.
Ends.
