August 23: Three-time Asian Tour Order of Merit winner, Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand fired a six-under-par 66 to take a share of third place after the first round of the Johnnie Walker Championship in Scotland.
The Thai ace marked his card with seven birdies against one bogey to stay one shot off leaders Ricardo Gonzales of Argentina and Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger at the Gleneagles Hotel.
“I played well today. I hit a lot of good shots and my game plan was good. The course is in a good condition today. A lot of players are playing well,” said the 43-year-old.
“You have to putt well and hit a lot of greens to play well on this course. I’ve played well on this course before and I remember finishing in top 25 at a tournament here. It’s kind of tough on the 18th though but I’m looking forward to the next round tomorrow,” added Thongchai, who is pushing to qualify for the International Team for the Presidents Cup in October.
India’s S.S.P. Chowrasia and Scott Hend of Australia returned with identical 71s to tie for 58th while Rikard Karlberg of Sweden and India’s Jeev Milkha Singh signed for 72 to take a share of 81st place.
