Thongchai proves his worth

Crans Montana, Switzerland, September 5: Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee got over the disappointment of missing out on a place in The Presidents Cup quickly by firing a three-under-par 68 to be among the early pacesetters at the Omega European Masters on Thursday.
After being overlooked by Nick Price for the biennial event, the 13-time Asian Tour winner showed Price he could be missing out on a great asset with his assured performance at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.
“It was a solid round for me. The greens are very tricky. Tee to greens are okay for me but you’ve got to be careful around the greens,” said Thongchai, who marked his card with an eagle, two birdies and one bogey.
Thongchai, who holds an unprecedented three Asian Tour Order of Merit titles, has enjoyed a superb season so far where he has five top-10 finishes including a runner-up result at the Volvo World Match Play Championship in May.
He would have become the first Thai to feature in The Presidents Cup had Price selected him as one of his captain’s picks.
The 43-year-old however felt it would have been easier had he earned his place through his own merit.
“I believe Nick knows what he’s doing when he made his selection. He sent me an email but I’ve not had read it yet. My wife is the one who reads my emails,” said Thongchai.
“I would have been an automatic choice if I finished inside the top-10 but I did not. It’s okay. I’ve no complaints. It’s not a big issue. I’ll try again next time and I wish the International Team the best of luck,” added the Thai ace, who finished in 11th place after qualification for the event closed last week.
Ends.
