March 10: Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, a three-time Asian Tour Order of Merit winner, showed why he is rated as one of Asia’s best when he signed off with a four-under-par 68 to finish tied-sixth at  the WGC-Cadillac Championship on Sunday.
Thongchai compiled a four-day total of four-under-par 289 to finish five shots back of eventual champion, Patrick Reed of the United States.
With his career best finish at the year’s second World Golf Championship, the evergreen 44-year-old also moved seven spots back into the world’s top-50 to stake his place among the game’s elite in 46th place.
With his impressive finish in Doral, Thongchai also justified his selection as Team Asia’s playing captain and will have the opportunity to shine on the big stage again when the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM gets underway at Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in Malaysia later this month.
Wales’ Jamie Donaldson, who was denied by Reed for his first World Golf Championship title after he had to settle for a share of second place with American Bubba Watson, will look towards the EurAsia Cup to salvage some measure of pride when he steps up to represent Team Europe.
Team Europe will be led by Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, who took a share of 13th place with his 291 total. The team will also feature Scotland's Stephen Gallacher, who shared sixth place with Thongchai and Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell who finished in ninth place on 290 at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Europe's EurAsia Cup playing captain Miguel Angel Jimenez finished tied 13th while countryman Gonzalo Fdez-Castano was amongst those in tied 54th position. Team Asia member Kim Hyung-sung enjoyed a creditable tied 34th position.
Australia’s Scott Hend, who finished second on the Order of Merit last season, posted a final round 71 to end his campaign in tied-16 while reigning Order of Merit champion Kiradech Aphibarnrat closed with a 79 to finish in 67th place.
Ends.
