March 7: Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee stayed close to the leaders as he was even-par through 12 holes at the weather-hit WGC-Cadillac Championship on Thursday.
The opening round was brought to a halt for more than two hours because of inclement weather, leaving the Thai, who will spearhead Team Asia’s charge at the inaugural EurAsia Cup present by DRB-HICOM later this month, with six more holes to play catch-up with the leaders at the redesigned Blue Monster, Trump National Doral.
It was a five-way tie for the lead with Italy’s Francesco Molinari’s sharing pole position alongside American quartet Jason Dufner, Hunter Mahan, Patrick Reed and Harris English , who was among only six players to have completed their first round.
Reigning Order of Merit champion Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who will also feature in the EurAsia Cup was one-over through 15 holes. The Thai marked his card with two birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey but it was a 54-foot par save on the eighth hole that was to be one of the highlights of his round.
Australia’s Scott Hend, a five-time winner on the region’s premier Tour, managed to complete his round with a 72 to take a share of 20th place before fading light stopped the day’s action.
Ends.
