Tour rookies aim to impress

Jakarta, April 9: A host of Asian Tour rookies will be looking to shine when they challenge the elite field at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters, which takes place at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club from April 24-27.
American Paul Peterson, Seb Gros of France and Canadian Ryan Yip, who earned their Tour cards at the Asian Tour Qualifying School in Thailand earlier this year, will be making their first appearances in the US$750,000 Asian Tour event, deemed as one of the most prestigious sporting events in Indonesia since it was inaugurated in 2011.
James Bowen of the United States, Canadian Lindsay Renolds as well as the Malaysian duo of Iain Steel and Nicholas Fung, who earned their 2014 Asian Tour cards after finishing inside the top four on the final Asian Development Tour (ADT) Order of Merit, will also be amongst an international mix of players from over 30 countries challenging for honours at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters.
Having honed his skills on the ADT last season, Bowen is brimming with confidence as he looks forward to his return to Indonesia where he claimed his maiden ADT title last year.
“The ADT has been a great stepping stone for me. I gained world ranking points and it helped put me on the world map as well. It has been great playing on the ADT in 2013. I’m really excited now that I get to play on the Asian Tour,” said the 27-year-old, who claimed a total of two victories on the ADT last season and finished second on the merit ranking.
Peterson, who claimed a remarkable top-five finish in his first Asian Tour event in the Philippines last month, is also eyeing his breakthrough at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters.
“I've heard good things about the Asian Tour and the way it is run and that is why i decided to join the Qualifying School. I'm glad to be part of it now and I'm looking forward to play in Indonesia,” said the 25-year-old, who finished in sixth place at Qualifying School to earn his Tour card.
Reigning ADT Order of Merit winner, Fung, who was part of Team Asia which produced a stunning fightback to share the inaugural EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM with Team Europe, will be looking for that similar resolve to do well when he tees off at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club.
“It was an enjoyable week for me at the EurAsia Cup. I’ve learned to be a little more patient with my game and coping with the crowd pressure. That was the best week of my golfing career so far as I get to play with top players from Europe and Asia altogether. Hopefully I can reproduce my good form in Jakarta,” said Fung, Malaysia’s highest ranked golfer.
The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters features a stellar field that includes Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand, Major winner Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa, defending champion Bernd Wiesberger of Austria, Victor Dubuisson of France and Thai star Thongchai Jaidee, a three-time Asian Tour Order of Merit winner.
The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters will have widespread exposure via a strong local media platform and the Asian Tour’s global television platform, which reaches out to over 200 countries and 627 million households on the Live, Highlights, Asian Tour Golf Show and Golfing World.
